“Why did it take so long?”

She glances at him. “Business and pack. It all seemed so important.”

“It's not now?”

“It is. I just forgot who I am, I guess. I needed to remember.”

I can see Barren chewing on that information.

“How did you remember?”

She laughs. “When I find out, you’ll be the first I tell, all right.”

I like her laugh. I love her confidence. She exudes mystery and control. It's fascinating.

She glances over her shoulder, straight at me, and frowns. I fold my arms over my chest and lean back with a smirk. I don’t know how she suddenly knew I was here, but it’s hot as fuck.

Her phone rings, breaking our stare off, and she pulls it out, looking at the screen before slipping it back into her pocket.

Barren shifts closer to her, and her eyes jerk to his face. I wish I wasn’t so far away so I could see her reactions better.

She tilts her head to the side and watches him carefully. “You don’t want to go home yet?”

He shakes his head.

“All right, tell the skulking alpha in the bush to come out, and I’ll let you lose when we race to the top.” She grins in challenge at him.

“Let me lose?” Barren barks out a rusty laugh. It’s so sudden and unexpected that he cuts it short, but my heart is pounding, my mouth watering. That sound. Oh, lord, I’ve missed that sound. “I’m not going to lose.”

“Fine, want to bet?”

He chews his bottom lip. “What are we betting?”

She frowns in thought. “Loser has to bring coffee tomorrow?”

His eyes light up. “Tomorrow?” I see him go to clutch at his hands, a nervous tic he’s developed, but then he doesn’t continue the movement. Yes!

She nods. “Yep. Since I’m going to keep running into you, we may as well do this properly.”

I shift myself onto the path so they can see.

“He can be our pack mule and carry heavy things as punishment for being shady as fuck.”

Barren looks back at me, and I can’t stop staring hungrily at the light in his eyes, the shine of happiness.

“All right.” He says cautiously.

“Good. You ready?”

“Yes.”

“Good. Run.”

She takes off, flying past me. Barren follows closely behind her. I pull out my phone and text Acton so he knows what’s happening and run after them, keeping them in sight but staying back far enough to give them space.

She wins, but not by much. I get the impression she slowed down. She promptly walks into the clearing, climbs up on a big rock, and stands with her arms outstretched. The wind snatches at her hair and, with her pink cheeks and heaving chest, I’m transfixed.

Barren follows her, stopping at the base and staring up at her with rapt attention. She looks down and smiles at him.
