“Come on, get up here.”

He climbs up beside her, and she maneuvers her way around him, spreading his arms before stepping back.

“What do you think?”

He stares, his mouth open, eyes shining. “It’s…beautiful. I feel like I’m a god over the entire valley. Like I’m a bird.”

“Yeah, it’s a really good way to get some perspective when life’s being crappy.”

She drops off the rock, landing in a crouch, and paces over to me, snagging my water bottle and taking a mouthful.

“Thanks, cutie.”

I narrow my eyes as she throws it back and paces around the rock Barren’s on and sits at the front of it. What game is she playing now? I peer at her closely and see the strain around her eyes. How much of this is show?

I move closer to the two of them and look out at the view. I’ve seen it before, but I haven’t. Not like this.

Barren sits down on the rock as Acton steps into the clearing. He pauses when he sees her, but she looks over at him, smiles, and then sits down and starts stretching.

He blinks, once, twice, three times. Before looking at me for advice. I shrug.

“Good morning.” He rumbles.

“Morning.” Scarlet sings back and continues her stretches. “Busy jogging track.”

Acton grunts and runs his fingertips along Barren’s hand before dropping into a crouch next to the alpha female. He waits until she turns and looks at him.

I tense.

She blinks at him, and her shoulders stiffen. But then I see a spill of red in her cheeks, and I relax. That’s five for five. She’s attracted to all of us, I’m sure of it.

Acton frowns in confusion and stands back up. “Sorry, I just wanted to see…never mind.”

“See what?” She asks suddenly.

He mutters something and vanishes.

“What did he want to see? Have I got something on my face?” She looks at me and then Barren in helpless confusion.

Barren bursts into laughter and collapses on the rock.

I touch her shoulder, and her whole body goes stiff. I lift my hands up, showing I mean no harm. “People fear Acton.”

She blinks. “Scared of him? Really? I can’t see it. Gold, on the other hand.” She shivers with exaggeration and winks at Barren, who leans in closer to her.

He’s fascinated with her, I realise. Like I am.

She stands up quickly and finds herself at head height with Barren, who’s laying on the rock on his stomach. She sways there for a moment, caught before she shakes her head and steps back. Her eyes dart all over the place but don’t land on him or me.

“I’ll see you guys tomorrow.”

Before I can think of something to say or do to stop her, she’s gone. Again.

Barren slides down off the rock and into my arms. I run my hands down his back and over his ass as he whines and nuzzles into my neck.

“Do you like her?” I ask really carefully. The chocolate scent is fading, leaving just the smell of the wet earth and trees. The air is bitterly cold without her here, and the view doesn’t look quite as impressive.

He hesitates. “Yes.”
