Jet leans over the railing, his hands crossed at the wrists. Acton is standing by a column not far away.

Gold, I can feel him like an oncoming storm, heading this way.

The doors open, and Taylor appears. The power in his aura is staggering. He glares coldly around, his eyes finding us one by one.

Scarlet hasn’t noticed him yet, but she’s going to. I shift in anticipation, and her head goes up. Even from here, I can see her searching, scanning, but we all shift just out of her sight.

And Taylor moves in.

He murmurs something. Her back stiffens.

Please, please, Scarlet, take it. I beg in my head.

She turns and puts her hand in his hand. And he pulls her into his arms as the music starts.

I exhale in relief and then throw my head back and laugh, then I prowl towards my alphas to claim what’s mine.

forty-two

Scarlet

I smile politely at the man in front of me. He laughs at his own joke, but I haven’t been listening for the past five minutes.

I’m bored.

The room is a glittering, luxurious affair. The champagne is top-notch; the food is sublime, and the richest and most famous people are here this evening. There are art pieces on display on the walls that any other day would make me stare. Creamy satin ribbons hang from chandeliers over polished floorboards and dark chocolate carpets. The venue is one of the ballrooms in Treyfield’s Sky Haven Hotel, one of the most expensive hotels in Silver Falls, and this one oozes expense and class.

But it no longer holds the same appeal.

“Will you excuse me?” I ask but turn and leave without waiting.

I step out of the room and find a dark hallway. I lean against the wall and exhale. There’s a headache tightening my temples. I just want to go home.

A girl rushes out and freezes when she sees me. She looks panicked. She’s a tiny little thing, and I get a faint wisp of her scent. Beta.

We hear a noise, and she flinches, both of us looking to the hallway.

“Run.” I whisper. “I didn’t see anything. But if anyone says anything, say you know me. My name’s Scarlet Waring.”

Her eyes flicker over me, and she nods. “Onyx Davies.”

She gives me a grateful smile and bolts.

An older man comes marching down the hallway a few minutes later. He spots me and stops.

“Uh, you didn’t see a young girl, did you?”

I shake my head. “No, it’s just me trying to get a minute of peace.” I put a bite into my tone, and the man flushes, his greasy comb over is almost dripping with sweat.

“Sorry. I’ll, sorry.” He turns on his heel and leaves.

I close my eyes. It’s been three months. It’s been excruciating. Every day, I wake up and tell myself it will get easier, but it never does.

I cradle my stomach, the faint little mound there. Proof that those weeks happened. I’ve been to five doctors who specialise in unusual pregnancies. No one thought an alpha could get pregnant. And yet, it turns out I am.

I rub my thumb over it. I’m so protective of her. I didn’t think I could feel like this. I’d never allowed myself to dream.

I stand up straight. This is the last time I’ll be out in this world. My dating app is up and running. I’ve appointed Sonya as the business manager of my company. Everything is falling into place.
