I just need to find a nice home for me and Jr. And them, if they ever decide to show themselves. I can’t help the bitter anger I’m feeling over their long absence.

I walk back into the ballroom and freeze when I get a whiff of lightning and rain. I whip my head around, but I can’t see him. It’s not the first time I’ve thought I’ve smelled them, and the doctor said my sense of smell could change or be heightened.

I barely make it three steps before some business associates stop me to chat. I’m standing there, fake smiling, and wishing I could be anywhere else when I’m enveloped in a cloud of his scent so powerful my knees go weak.

“Dance with me.” The sound of his voice makes me groan.

I inhale and almost choke. I turn slowly, and there he is, larger than life.

He holds his hand out to me, and with a tiny hesitation that is more on searching his eyes to see his feelings; I place my hand in his, making my choice. I tear my eyes from Taylor’s. Gold moves around the dance floor, stalking towards us. My heart jumps. Jet is on the balcony, leaning on the railing, smiling softly, and Acton is standing by the doors, arms folded over his chest.

How did I miss them before? Where is Bar?

“Dance with me, War.” It’s a command.

I jerk my head in a nod and let him lead me into another one of those dances, like our first one in the gazebo. Elegant, smooth, effortless.

“You came.”

“I’m sorry it took so long.” He mumbles.

I can’t believe I’m in his arms. This feels like a dream.

“I should have told you everything, and I will. But I’m here tonight saying that you are the only cure for our broken pack. You’re the only cure for me.” Taylor lets me go, stepping back, and Jet steps into his place.

It’s a graceful move that takes my breath away.

“Your cheeks were red, and you looked so shocked and surprised that first moment, you and that nail. You might not have seen it, but my entire world was shaken.” Jet leans in so his mouth is pressed against my ear. “In that moment, I was gone.”

He steps back, and Acton engulfs me in his arms.

“Acton?”

“Hey, little wolf.”

My eyes prickle with tears.

“You look beautiful tonight. You looked beautiful that day, too, and every day. I thought I was dreaming seeing you there, so brave, so strong. Smiling at me like it’s the most natural thing in the world. No one has seen me so fast before. I won’t pretend anymore, I promise. You’ve been my alpha since the day Barren flattened you on that little running path. There is no us without you.”

I shake my head and blink hard, struggling not to cry.

He spins me and lets go.

I crash into a hard chest, and a mouth smashes against mine. I gasp and wrap my arms around his neck. Holding on, holding myself up. Oh, that taste, these arms. I’ve dreamed about them forever. My forbidden love.

“You just keep running away. It’s not very alpha-like.”

I snort. “It’s not running, it’s a strategic retreat.”

“I have loved you every minute of every day since my mother dragged us to our new home and married your father.” Gold growls into my mouth. “You belong to us now, Red. I’m not ever letting you get away again. I can’t lose you a third time.”

He stops our dance and steps back. He steps to the side, and Barren advances, flanked by his alphas. He’s wearing a jet black tux with his hair combed back. He looks confident, fearless, and strong.

He stops in front of me and turns in a slow circle, waiting as the murmuring from the crowd dies down.

“This alpha is mine.” His voice rings out, almost with challenge.

I scowl, but my heart beats wildly in my chest. The crowd draws back, all of them watching intently. I catch sight of smiles and confused frowns and know we’re going to be the talk of Silver Falls by midnight.
