I get up and cross to where she’s standing, noticing she’s not looking out at the view like I thought, but observing Jet and Barren in the reflection. I stop beside her, leaving only a few inches.

She’s shorter than I’d assumed she’d be when I noticed her at some of the parties we’ve both attended. She seems bigger, taller, but the top of her head only comes up to my shoulder. Maybe it’s all her personality.

“It's warm tonight.”

“In a couple of weeks, it will be cold.” She says sadly. “I should have left months ago.”

“Was it so bad in the city?”

She wrinkles her nose. “Have you ever ended up doing something you hated and turning into someone everyone else wanted but was the opposite of who you are?” She peers up at me, her eyes twinkling. “No? Just me?”

“I can relate.” I admit.

She gives me a disbelieving stare.

“Believe it or not, but I have a degree in law. One I don’t use anymore and intend never to touch again.”

Her lips curl in an intimate smile. “I’d love to hear that story.”

I lean down a little. “We’ll have to arrange it.”

It’s seductive, it’s flirty, it’s wrong. I don’t even feel remotely bad. The net I’m casting is bigger than even my pack realises.

She grins wider and then looks past me. Jet comes up and drapes himself over my back, resting his chin on my shoulder.

I observe her carefully. Her eyes dilate, she licks her bottom lip. Her cheeks flush, and she quickly averts her eyes. Every reaction is perfect. She’s so damn perfect. But wrong time. Timing could not be worse. I could howl at the universe for being such a bitch.

Jet presses his lips to my ear. “Ima try something, don’t freak out.”

I give a tiny, stiff nod as Jet peels himself off me. He gathers Barren, who is standing close by to him, and then tripping on air, he pulls Barren straight into her.

I close my eyes. Fucking idiot. Sometimes, I want to kill him. While I plan meticulously, Jet lives his life by the seat of his pants and his instincts. But he does get results, I have to give it to him.

Barren is pressed up against Scarlet, his face buried in the crook of her neck, his hands on the window on either side of her. He’s lost, following his instincts. An omega scenting an alpha who could be his. Oranges turn the air sweet like candy. His need and arousal thrums through the bond.

“What does she smell like, Omega?” Jet purrs.

“Safe. She smells safe.” Barren sighs and nuzzles closer.

Those words. Those damnable words. Any hesitation I had is gone. I’ll do whatever it takes. No matter who it hurts.

I don’t think Scarlet’s even dared to breathe. The sheer control she must have to keep her hands in the air and hold her head still is impressive. And she feels it. Chocolate coats the air, sweet and bitter, wrapping around us all. Her breathing is rapid, her eyes huge and black, and her cheeks have turned a delicious, edible pink.

The bond link between the five of us opens properly for the first time in months, and I can’t hold back the growl that tears out of my throat. I hear the echoes of three others and see Scarlet’s eyes jump from one of us to the other.

“Jet,” I growl.

He turns to look at me, and the heat pouring out of his eyes makes my cock, that is already rock hard, jump. Acton crosses the room and carefully pulls Barren off Scarlet. Barren whimpers and turns in Acton’s arms, wrapping himself around the huge man.

Scarlet holds perfectly still, like the smallest movement from her might break the precarious control we all have. She’s not wrong. But she’s definitely got no idea what we would do. Throw her and Barren into a room with us and knot them both until we all forget the world exists.

Gold shakes himself out of it first, walking to the glass door and pushing it open. Mistake number two because it washes her scent, that rich, deep, bitter chocolate, into the room, and in it, I scent her thick arousal. She wants us.

I feel triumphant.

But she’s leaving. Why is she leaving? Gold murmurs to her, and she backs up, step by step, until she’s out of the light that’s shining through the windows and in the darkness. She turns and calmly stalks away.

“Scarlet, there’s a gate in the security fence near the trail to your cottage. I’ll open it for you.” Jet calls out.
