I don’t hear an answer, but I didn’t expect one.

Jet and I move to the glass doors, watching as Gold stands in the light, his shoulders heaving like it’s taking all his control to stand still.

He whirls, snarling at us. “She has a pack! What is wrong with you, putting her in that position?” He scrapes his hand through his blond hair. “Putting him through that.”

Jet growls and steps up to Gold.

“Stop it, both of you.” I snap. “Barren needs us. Focus on that. Can you feel it?”

The other two nod, Gold blowing out his cheeks and grunting an affirmative.

“Let’s go take care of him, and then we can talk.”

I lead the way back into the house and up the stairs to our bedroom. Not the nest. Not yet. But soon.

I sit in the armchair, staring at the fire. Jet is pacing back and forth beside it while Gold stands on the other side of the room. Acton walks in and pulls the door closed behind him.

“Tell us about her, Gold.”

He stiffens, then slumps. “She’s my step-father’s daughter. She was thirteen, I think, when we met. I was fourteen. For three years, we were inseparable.”

“Then what happened?” Acton rumbles.

“I presented as Alpha, went to college, and when I came back during the summer, she was gone.” He sighs, looking defeated. “I went looking for her over the years. I didn’t believe what they’d said. I found her. Her pack gave me a message from her. ‘I don't know anyone by that name.’ Then they had security throw me out.” Gold shrugs.

I feel like that’s not entirely the whole story, but we can all feel his pain through the bond, and I don’t want to hurt him more than he is.

“Why doesn’t your family acknowledge her?” Jet asks.

Gold snaps his head around, fury in his eyes. “Because they don't believe alphas should be female. Her father called her an abomination. I didn’t realise she’d actually presented as one, though. I thought it was just some excuse because of what we-” He cuts himself off.

I rub my temples. “Where are her bond marks? Why doesn’t she smell like a pack?”

Gold folds his arms over his chest. “I met them.”

“So they exist?” I ask casually. I already know all this information and then some, but I want to let this play out. We have to let this play out.

He nods sharply.

There’s an echo of disappointment around the bond. But it’s smothered when the door opens, and Barren slips into the room.

He comes straight to me, hesitating only a second before sliding onto my lap. I wrap an arm around him as he leans back into me.

“What were you talking about?”

I don’t lie. Not to him. “Scarlet.”

He stiffens. You probably couldn’t tell, but I feel every muscle go taut. “She’s my alpha.”

I stiffen. “She’s got a pack. She said so.”

He shakes his head stubbornly. “No. She’s mine.” Oh, the sexy, aggressive possession in my baby boy.

“She does, baby. I’ve met them,” Gold says softly.

“No. She feels like mine.” I don’t know what he’s protesting.

I frown. “She’s got a pack, maybe an omega-“
