Bar hits the accelerator and throws the car forward, easily drifting the tail end around and speeding us out of the property.

“What are you doing?” I ask tersely.

“Making a point.”

“What point?” I shriek.

“I’m not broken. I don't want kid mittens. I’m a fucking man. An omega. That doesn’t make me helpless. I can still be that person I used to be.”

“Fine, I accept all that, but can you slow down a little bit because if you break my car, you’re going to find out just how pissy a female alpha can get.” I put a bite and emphasis on the words to show I’m serious without sending any bark.

He slows down.

“All right, Barren. Talk to me. Tell me what this is about.”

He scowls, his fingers tightening on the steering wheel until his knuckles are white. He opens his mouth to speak when we both spot two trucks in my front yard.

“Who the fuck?” I jerk a startled look at Barren, surprised into silence by the deadly venom in his voice. His grip on the steering wheel tightens a bit more, making me worry it’ll snap, and his face transforms into a mask of predatory intent.

The door opens, and Phil stands up, his ginger hair lifting in the breeze. In his grey suit, he looks too much like a car salesman. I get a flash of memory of Taylor and compare the pair. Phil comes up short. From the other car comes Rick, and…I scowl, Tabby.

“Who are they?” Barren growls darkly.

“Bar, I’m going to get out, and you’re going to drive straight home.” He’s not even paying me any attention as he parks the car and gets out.

Shit. Shit. Shit.

I leap out of the car and round the front of it to put myself between Bar and Phil. I am one hundred percent confident I can keep all four of them safe, but I don’t want them to hurt Barren.

I press myself against Bar to stop him advancing.

“What are you doing here, Phil?” I hurl out.

Phil grunts. “Who’s he?”

“None of your business. What are you doing here?”

Phil inhales, but with all the trees, fresh air, and rain, I know he won’t pick up much. Still, it’s the height of rudeness, and Barren stiffens behind me. He slides one arm around my stomach and puts his chin on my shoulder. My heart flutters wildly at the obvious claim Bar is making.

“Go back to where you came from.” I tell Phil tiredly.

“Seriously, Scarlet? Could you sink any lower?” Rich says in disgust, giving Bar a once over.

“Go home.” This is my last warning.

“We came to get you, darling,” Phil says at last. He tries to smile, but it just comes out all wrong. I can’t believe I stayed with these guys this long.

“Hard pass. I’m happy here.”

“Wasted no time spreading your legs, didn’t you?” Rick sneers.

Barren jerks, but I grip his arm, refusing to let go. There’s an almost silent growl emanating from him now.

“It's called choice and standards, maybe look it up in a dictionary.” I snap, three quarters of my attention is on Bar, I’m barely even listening to Phil or Rick.

“Fuck!” Phil bellows. “Rick, go sit in the car. Fucking hell.” Phil turns back to me. “Come home. You know no one else will take you, and the business is suffering.”

Barren has stiffened behind me, going almost rigid. The growl cuts off. “No wonder you don't have pack bonds. I’d rather chew my own leg off.”
