Rick barks a laugh. “Bond her? No way. Who the fuck would want a bond with that?”

I frown. Is it strange that I’m so used to Rick’s remarks that I don’t even feel the sting anymore? How long has he been openly disrespectful?

Tabby drifts over to Phil and takes his hand. I feel Bar’s eyes on her, and it feels dangerous, explosive. I have to diffuse the situation and get Bar out of here. There’s a hostility, a dangerous focus on the omega that he doesn’t have for the alphas.

“You’re part of our pack,” Tabby coos. “Come home. We need you. We aren’t a family without you.”

Bar snarls. A violent, possessive, almost alpha-sounding snarl that stuns me speechless. I’ve never heard anyone sound so furious and dangerous in my entire life, man, woman, alpha, beta, or omega. And it’s directed at the omega. What is going on here?

“Mine.” He hisses, a dark malevolence that brooks no argument.

I see Phil swallow hard, and Tabby eases behind his back. Even Rick has slid into the car, watching with wide eyes.

His arms are like bands around my waist, tightening and drawing me back against him. I’m not going to get help from the three of them. I have to get them to leave.

“Tabby, you hate me. You like money. I gave you all the money and the business that you guys deserved.”

“That was a pittance!” Tabby stomps her feet.

I roll my eyes and look at Rick. “This is the little cabin that I live in. It’s mine. I’m happy. I severed ties. I moved out. I gave up my home, my business, and what I thought was my pack. What more do you want?”

Rick frowns. I can see him thinking.

“There has to be more money. How could the business be worth so little?” He yells from the car.

I frown, confused. Worth so little? It should have provided for them comfortably for years.

“We sold it?” Phil winces as he says it.

I suck in a wounded gasp. “You sold my baby?”

Phil realises he’s made a huge mistake. I can see it on his face. But now Bar is the one keeping me from crossing the distance and clawing his face off. All I can think is all the hundreds of hours I poured into it. The late nights, triumphs, failures.

“Come home. We can sort this out.”

I pull my hair, shrieking. “There’s nothing to sort out. I don’t want you. I left. Leave me the fuck alone.”

Phil sighs. “We had to try. The situation is grave. You’re the only one who can save us.”

I shake my head in denial. “Drown then, motherfucker.”

Phil winces and lets his chin drop. “Okay. Okay. We had no right. We’ll go now.”

I’m silent while they get back into the car. Through the windshield, I can see Tabby having a massive fight with Phil. He slumps forward, looking like he’s aged ten years. I almost feel sorry for him.

Until I remember he sold my baby. Then the fury and hurt returns.

We watch until we can no longer hear the cars, and then Bar drags me towards the door of the cottage.

I look at the floors. “There’s no water damage.”

“I lied.” His tone is flat, angry.

I look up. “Pardon?”

“I wanted to see you. I couldn’t go two days. So I lied. And I’m not sorry. And I made Gold lie, and I’m not sorry for that, either. You belong with me.”

He yanks me into the house and slams the door behind me, locking it for good measure. He looks around, spots the bed, and pulls me to it. I try to pull my arm free, but he simply pushes until I tilt backwards. As soon as my back hits the mattress, he’s straddling my chest.
