"You got it. So, tell me about Riggs. You seem very devoted to him for someone who is engaged. To his father, I might add."

"I am," Naomie didn't flinch or hesitate. She understood that not everyone would understand her feelings for Riggs. People generally didn't believe men and women could be real friends without sex getting in the way.

Maybe it didn't get in the way for her and Riggs because they'd acknowledged a long time ago there was an attraction. People failed to grasp that you could find someone attractive and sexy and even admit that you would be interested if you weren't involved. But that was a significantif, and it didn't take priority over the friendship.

Naomie would be thrilled if Riggs found someone he wanted to spend his life with, but it wouldn't stop her from loving him, kidding around with him, or considering him one of her best friends. Heck, she felt that way about Mace, and he was married to one of her best friends.

"And?" Georgie prompted her.

"Riggs and I are friends in the truest sense of the word. He'd risk his life for me, and I would for him. He'd come to my aid with never a question asked, and he'd just as quickly tell me I'm full of shit when I'm acting like a fool. He's Russ's son, which makes him doubly precious because Russ isthemost important person in my world and theonlyman for me. So, yes, I'm devoted to Riggs. That's why we're sitting here. I wanted him to have the best chance at a full and normal life, which meant having the best people on his team.

"Like you. You'll help him get there.'

"I'll do my best," she paused for a second. "And for what it's worth, I think it may take him a while to get accustomed to the sight of his prosthesis. You may want to mention the covers available that provide a cosmetic cover."

"What makes you think that will matter to him?" Naomie asked.

"The way he reacted to my leg."

"Oh, you mean the way the flirty looks stopped?"

"You noticed?"

"Of course I did. I pay attention. And maybe you're right. Or maybe he'll come to accept it the way you have. Do you have a cover?"

"I do, but I haven't worn it in … well, I don't remember when."

Naomie smiled at her. "That's what I admire about you, and I hope Riggs will get to where you are. With your help, I think he can. He needs to see that he does not have a disability and isn't limited."

"Naomie?"

Naomie looked past Georgie to see Dr. Thomason crossing the room to them. "How is he?" She asked the moment he drew near.

"Doing well. There were no complications, and I don't anticipate any issues. He's in recovery, and you should be able to see him in an hour or so. Do you have any questions?"

"No, but his father might. He just stepped out to make a call. Can you give me two minutes?"

"Certainly."

Naomie quickly texted Russell and, while they waited, chatted about the upgrade to the IMES and whether they could have it ready by the time Riggs was set for the final procedure. Russell hurried in and shook Dr. Thomason's hand. "How is he?"

"Fine. The operation went smoothly, and thanks to his excellent health and overall strength I don't anticipate any issues."

"Thank you, Doctor," Russell said. "I can't tell you how grateful I – all his family is."

"I'm pleased and grateful to you, sir. We received notification this morning of the generous donation made in your son's name that will allow us to continue our quest for a more complete integration between prosthetics and flesh."

"I–I'm sorry, I'm confused. We didn't–"

"Yes, we did," Naomie interrupted. She forgot she'd arranged for the donation. "And we're proud to be able to help in your work."

"Well, thank you again, Georgie, if I could borrow you?"

"Oh yes, of course. Naomie, Mr. Russell, we'll make sure someone notifies you as soon as you can visit with Riggs."

"Thanks, Georgie," Naomie said. "Thanks to all of you. I'll see you soon."

She turned to Russell. "What's that look?"
