“The one that gets me ready for a prosthetic limb, the stem whatever you call it.”

“Yes.”

“Hallelujah,” he said and blew out a breath. “When can we do it?”

“We’re waiting on Naomie to do her final tests on the IMES. Once she signs off, we’re on go.”

“Not a moment too soon for me.”

“You might have to be patient for a few more weeks. Testing takes time, and she has to get it right.”

“Oh, she’ll get it right. She’s Naomie.”

“No kidding,” she laughed and closed the report to open a browser window. “And on that note, what do you feel like for dinner?”

“Steak. A big fat, rare steak.”

“Okay, what do you want with that?”

“It doesn’t matter. I’ll eat anything.”

“Well, that makes it easy. Then take a look at our choices.”

“Sounds good, but can we wait until we get back to my room? I’m paying and my wallet is there.”

“No, you are not paying.”

“Oh yeah, I am.”

“You want to fight about it?” she teased.

“Does wrestling count, ‘cuz I am down for that.”

The look he gave her made her skin grow warm. It would probably be wise for her to try and step back from this growing attraction. If everything worked out in his favor, he might return to active duty.

And leave her behind. He’d remember her as his physical therapist, a woman who helped him pass the time with a casual flirtation, but nothing more.

It surprised her how much that thought hurt.

Chapter Nine

Georgie dropped her keys as she exited the car and bent to pick them up. Focused on locking the car and getting her messenger bag hooked over her shoulder without dropping her purse, she headed up the short sidewalk, paying no attention to what was ahead.

She came to an abrupt halt when she looked up and saw Josh sitting on the steps of her townhouse. "What are you doing sitting out here?"

"Do you have any fucking idea what time it is?"

The slight slurring of his words had her looking more closely. Sure enough, there was a drink in his hand. "Let's go inside," she said as she tried to ease around him.

He stuck out one hand and grabbed the strap of her messenger bag, almost jerking her off balance. "Stop it!" she snapped, walking around him and through the door.

She was about to close it when he was suddenly there with his hand stuck out to keep the door from closing. Georgie headed for the kitchen and put her messenger bag and purse on the small table along one wall. Just as she turned, Josh stepped in front of her.

"I asked you a question."

She checked her watch. "It's half past nine."

"Where were you?"
