Lou: That’s not what I meant.

Henrik: But you laughed. emoji.

Lou: May I suggest you don’t become a comedian? You suck.

Henrik: Have you heard from Ameline or Hunter yet?

Lou: Not after I asked them if I could get videocalls with the children.

Henrik: Are they submitting a petition for that?

Lou: No. Hunter said they’re looking into the case and don’t want to alert them that I’ve got a lawyer and might be fighting him for custody soon.

Henrik: That sounds sensible.

Lou: It does, but I miss them so much. It’s been awhile since the last time I saw them. Who knows if Tony is treating them right or if their stepmother is being patient enough?. Especially with Tilly. She’s a very picky eater. Archie is a sensible boy.

Henrik: I wish I could take them away from him now and bring them to you.

Lou: Thanks—I mean that, really. Now, enough about me—how about you? You’ve never told me about your ex. Other than that things didn’t work out.

Henrik: We were convenient. Once her boyfriend stopped being the captain of the Boston Blizzards . . . Well, here we are.

Lou: I’m sorry she broke your heart.

Henrik: And that’s probably the worst part. I realized that I wasn’t in love with her. I cared for her enough, but didn’t love her the way I should’ve.

Lou: I can’t even remember if I ever loved Tony. Right now I just hate him.

Henrik: Don’t let him get to you. Find a way to forgive and forget him.

Lou: Is this the lumberjack in you?

Henrik: Ha! I’m not a lumberjack, I already told you.

Lou: But you will be once I get you the official flannel shirt!

Henrik: As much as I want to keep chatting with you, I’m heading to NYC. Talk to you soon.

Lou: Wait, what are you doing there?

Henrik: Mom needs me to be at some formal dinner.

Henrik: Next time I’ll drag you with me so I don’t have to deal with my parents and their stuffy friends.

Lou: You sound like Paul.

Henrik: There’s a reason why we’re friends. By the way, don’t stay up too late working.

ChapterTwelve

Henrik

What happenswhen Louanne McFolley decides to avoid me for the fifth day in a row?

I head to the Kneady Kentbury Bakes under the pretense of wanting cinnamon rolls for breakfast. Stepping inside, I’m enveloped by the rich scents of sugar, cinnamon, and rising dough. My gaze immediately finds Lou behind the bakery counter heading toward the back, her dark hair falling in soft waves around her lovely face. She looks up, meeting my eyes for a brief second before glancing away.

Not even a hello. What did I do to her?
