Lara:You’re sick and twisted. He’s a cop and working.

Henry:I’m in the wrong line of employment, if that’s part of the job.

Candace:Excuse me?

Henry:I don’t mean with other people, babe. Clearly I’d only be a detective for you.

I roll my eyes and laugh, setting my phone on the side table before placing the towel in the bathroom and walk to the bed, crawling under the blankets and shivering at the chill.

Dan shifts closer and warmth seeps from his body as my eyes shut and exhaustion claims me.

Chapter 20

The sound of screaming jolts me from my sleep as a pair of large hands grip my shoulders, shaking me.

My instincts and training automatically kick in, and I knock the arms off, they reach me again, grabbing me by my biceps and I act. Within the blink of an eye, I’m rolling to the side and off the bed with blankets in tow, landing with a grunt.

I quickly free myself of the tangled covers as my attacker grabs me around the shoulders in an attempt to render my arms useless. I dodge under his reach, gasping one of the limbs and twist it behind his back, kicking out his knees, and he drops to the ground with a thud.

I shove his body down until he’s laying on his stomach with his hand angled painfully along his spine.

I’m panting and straddling my assailant, my body weight and one hand on his twisted arm between my thighs, my other holding onto his non-contorted arm in case he decides to move it.

My heart rate starts to calm and the blood roaring in my ears quiets down as I catch my breath.

Dan walks up to me, nudging me with his cold nose.

Oh, now he shows up. Where was Dan when I was being attacked?

I look back to my shirtless assailant and realize he has shorter jet black hair and is solely wearing sweatpants.

Oh god.

I release his hands to cover my mouth, shifting my weight onto one leg instead of straddling Caspian fully, I stare at the back of his head in pure horror.

“Oh my god. I’m so sorry, Caspian. I had no idea it was you.” His arm twists into a normal position and I look at Dan, “Why didn’t you stop me?!”

Dan whimpers and his ears lay back flat.

Caspian’s body vibrates with a deep chuckle that shoots heat into my core as he shifts in place to turn over beneath me, leaning backwards onto his arms.

“Well at the very least, I know you can handle yourself with self-defense in hand-to-hand combat.”

My face burns and I cover my head with my hands again. “What the hell just happened? Why was there screaming when you woke me up?”

Caspian glances at Dan and then back to me and his eyes narrow, “You were the one screaming, Lara.”

My jaw goes slack and my hands drop, resting on Caspian’s deliciously defined abdomen, “What?” My voice comes out more breathy than intended as I try to keep my mind off of how he feels below me.

His brows pinch together and he tilts his head, “You don’t remember?”

I shake my head in response, “No. I was sleeping and heard screaming when I was being woken up. I felt your hands on my shoulders as I woke up, and I just acted.” I explain.

He nods in understanding, and there’s a long pause as I replay the events in my mind. Glancing at Caspian, I notice his intense gaze fixed on my face while I remain seated on top of him.

What...?

Even in the dark, I can discern heat in his eyes as they darken, sending nervous butterflies throughout my body.
