Still, it may be in my best interest to let her continue, unaware that I’m watching every movement. Her time is running out.

“Remain on standby. We observe for now, report back routine and habits. I want every detail. Where she shits, pisses, eats and sleeps. I want a full report on all of it.”

“Yes sir,” Lionel says as the call disconnects.

I sigh deeply and relax in my chair as the door opens, revealing a sneering Blair. She was stuck here in this realm when magic was bound all those years ago and is the one who foresaw Lara’s part in the reinstatement of it. I wish I could say she’s bitter and impatient because the time spent unable to shift into her serpent but, unfortunately she’s always been like this.

Blair has less reason than I have to want magic restored. She has no family, no friends, no position, no title. She has one singular purpose, but she will stop at nothing if it gets us back home.

‘By any means necessary’ should be her motto.

It’s something we’ve argued at length about.

She leans against the frame with a shoulder and crosses her lanky arms. Her lips curl into a snarl as she glares at me, and my blood pressure instantly rises.

“What is it now, Blair?” I snap.

“I’m becoming impatient, Caspian. She’s taking too long to gather the amulets.”

I stare into her empty, almost-black eyes and feign boredom, “The amulets are being recovered at an appropriate speed. We will have all of them before the next full moon.”

Blair scoffs and shakes her head, her black hair swishing from one side to the other.

“She has found half of them. At this rate it will be months before magic is restored and we undo your banishment.”

My jaw clenches. I despise this conversation with my entire being. The requirements for breaking my banishment is one thing, reinstating magic is a whole other topic I wish to avoid but every time Blair opens her fucking mouth, it’s all that I can think about.

“It has been two weeks that she’s been gathering them. They will be recovered in due time.”

Blair’s eyes narrow on me, her doubt evident in her gaze. “Are you sure you’re willing to do what is needed, Caspian? You’ve been different lately, and Samira--” Her voice trails off, but I know her well enough to sense the underlying concern beneath her restrained tone.

“Enough!” I snap, my voice laced with an edge of fury. “It will be done. Now get out.”

She huffs in frustration and whirls to leave, slamming the door behind her, and I’m left alone with my thoughts.

This intricate web of good versus evil is going to make me come undone. The question is, will Lara unravel with it?

Chapter 33

Lara

The brightness flooding into the room turns the back of my eyelids a tinge of pink, and I slowly crack them open, seeing Val’s dark fur in front of me.

My stomach is queasy from the alcohol, gurgling loudly beneath the covers as a heavy arm dangles around my waist and I hear a chuckle behind me.

Darian’s muffled voice is rough with sleep, “I lost the deal of making breakfast but couldn’t bring myself to get out of bed, so forgive me, but I ordered food.”

I laugh quietly and try to sit up, but find myself trapped beneath the mess of blankets and the weight of both Darian and Val.

My bladder feels like it’s going to explode.

“I don’t wish to disturb either of you, but I urgently need to use the washroom and can’t get up.”

Darian chuckles, flinging the blankets off before getting up, and I roll my eyes as Val huffs but remains where he is.

As I start to walk to the other room, Darian’s phone chimes and I glance at him. His jaw flexes as he looks at the screen and I know it’s not a notification of the food being delivered. “It’s another location, isn’t it?”

His eyes flick to mine, and he gives a subtle nod, “It is, but it’s not exactly close. We’ll eat breakfast and then we need to pick upsome supplies before leaving. Val, you’ll be coming with us.” Val’s head perks up, and he glances at Darian with concerned eyes.
