"You're right," she says, squeezing my fingers. "I can do this."

"You can. You spend most of your free time at the shop with them anyway. The only difference is you'll be getting paid to do it now."

A tiny smile crosses her face. The dimple in her right cheek peeps out at me. "I do like getting paid."

I laugh quietly and then groan. "If you need more motivation…you'll probably be the only one with a job come Monday, so you definitely have to nail it tomorrow," I say, grimacing.

"What? Why?" She gapes at me. "You love your job. Your job loves you."

"Yes, well, that wasbeforeI ran into my boss at a BDSM club."

Elodie stares at me in complete silence for a long moment and then bursts into loud peals of laughter, clutching her stomach. "Oh my god, Gemma. That's hilarious."

"It was so awkward," I groan. "He pulled Bronx aside and told Bronx that I shouldn't be there." I stare at her with wide eyes. "Bronx basically told him to 'eff off. Micah didn't even seem mad about it! It was so weird."

Elodie wipes tears from her eyes, still laughing. "I think Bronx just got Micah's stamp of approval, Gemma."

"What? No."

"Your boss is a Dom."

"Seriously? That explains so much," I mumble.

Elodie shakes her head at me. "He told your man to get you out of the club, and your man said no. Micah didn't argue. We both know Micah cares about you. So the only logical conclusion is that Micah decided you were in good hands." She laughs again. "I kinda want to come to work with you on Monday morning though. That conversation is going to be so much fun!"

"Not for me."

"True. It does suck to be you right now." She gives me a cheeky grin. "But it really does not suck to be your best friend right now. So much drama!"

I stick my tongue out at her. We both know she's only invested in my drama because she's trying to ignore her own. Like the fact that Coby probably knows she took that invitation. And the fact that she'll be working with him and her brother come tomorrow.

Jeez. When did our lives become so complicated? I thought small-town life was supposed to be boring. But ours have quickly become anything but boring and ho-hum.

I think this might be the most exciting our lives have ever been.

Icheck my phoneafter climbing out the—very cold—shower to find several missed calls and texts from my sisters.

Leia: Why aren't you answering your phone?

Charlie: Are you ignoring us?

Charlie: OMG. You are, aren't you?

Adalynn: She's probably asleep.

Heidi: It's nine o'clock. She isn't sleeping.

Leia: I called Elodie. She's sleeping.

Charlie: Lame.

I smile, shaking my head. I love my sisters to death, but now that we're all in the same town again, it's like living at home all over. I know they mean well, but sometimes, I think they forget that I'm not twelve anymore. I don't need my big sisters to protect me. Aside from Heidi, they're all married with babies.

I want the same things for myself. But I can't even go out for a night without them calling Elodie to find out why I'm not answering my phone. It's a little ridiculous, honestly. But it's so hard to be upset with them about it because I know why they are the way they are.

When we were little, our biological parents routinely neglected us. They would lose custody of us and get it back. When they had us, they didn't take care of us. My sisters took care of me. Theyfed me, changed my diapers, made sure I was safe. Until one day, our bio parents left us alone in the house and never came back. We were just little kids, left to fend for ourselves.

It took a week before we ran out of food and Adalynn went looking for help.
