“It’s okay. If it will take the burden off you and make the wedding go smoothly, I’ll do it.”

Her friend stood, shaking her head vehemently. “I’m touched, but that’s not going to work for me. You’re my friend, too. I want you here to support me.” In two swift steps, she moved toward Becca and pulled her into a tight hug. “You’re staying.”

“Only if you’re sure.”

“I’m sure,” Katrina insisted. She pulled back and her eyes searched Becca’s. “There is just one thing I’m curious about.”

“What’s that?”

“In your search history, I noticed a theme.”

Becca didn’t dare breathe. She’d hoped Tina wouldn’t put two and two together. But Katrina was sharp. She’d only need to see a couple things before figuring it out.

“You’re a writer, aren’t you?”

Becca stared right back at her friend. Yep, she’d figured it out.

“Yeah,” she whispered.

“Aromanceauthor…”

She didn’t know why, but she shut her eyes so tight that she saw sparks. “Yeah.”

It was quiet for a long moment. Becca steeled herself for the laughter. As soon as the information got out, everyone would be laughing.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Katrina’s quiet voice pulled Becca from her stupor, and she stared at her friend with curiosity.

“What?”

“Why didn’t you tell me that you were a writer? I thought we shared everything. First you didn’t tell me that you were secretly dating my cousin. Now this? I guess I understand the relationship thing, but I don’t understand why you didn’t tell me you’re a writer?” Katrina gestured to the computer that had been deposited on the couch. “That doesn’t make sense. Why keep something like that from us?”

“Because I didn’t want you to make fun of me.”

Katrina’s blank stare said more than words ever could. A myriad of emotions crossed her friend’s face. This was it, the moment of truth.

“Why would I make fun of you?”

Becca threw her hands into the air with a sharp laugh. “Out of every girl here, I’m the only one whose relationships always fail. How can I write about romance when I can’t hold onto the guy I care about any more than I can catch the moon and bring it down to share with everyone? I’m not a relationship guru.”

“So?”

“So? You seriously don’t see it? How many people do you think will read a book written by someone who doesn’t know anything about what they’re writing?”

“Romance is a fiction genre, Becca. That means it’s just as much a fantasy as any other story. It’s an escape. It’s a way for people to forget their lives and enter a new one.” Her eyes widened. “Wait, you said you can’t keep the guy you like. Is something going on between you and Ethan?”

Becca grimaced. She should have been more careful with her words.

“Because if it is, you need to fix it.”

That was the problem. She couldn’t fix something that wasn’t broken.

Katrina placed a hand on Becca’s forearm. “Whatever is going on between you, you need to work it out. You’re too cute together.”

“Thanks for saying so. He is pretty handsome.”

“Seriously, you do seem good together. I want you to get things worked out.” Katrina squeezed Becca’s arm and stood up.
