‘Just some food for our lunch and a few things for your home.’

‘Clover, you shouldn’t have, and you certainly shouldn’t have carried such heavy bags all the way here.’

‘It does me good, dear. Weight bearing is good for my old bones and muscles. Inactivity leads to weakness, and I never want to feel weak.’

Clover let Brooke take the bags, then she followed her inside. ‘It’s looking good, Brooke,’ she said, admiring the hallway.

‘I’m so happy with what Ethan has done.’

‘I can’t take all the credit,’ Ethan said, appearing from the lounge, wiping his hands on a cloth. He had a streak of blue paint on his cheek. ‘Brooke has done a lot herself.’

Brooke smiled. ‘Just what I could when I wasn’t busy with work.’

‘How’re you, Ethan?’ Clover asked, smiling at the handsome young man.

‘Very well, thanks, Clover.’ His brown eyes twinkled, and he ruffled a hand over his dark hair. ‘And you?’

‘Excellent, thank you.’

‘Glad to hear it.’

‘And how are Lila and the little one?’

‘Lila and Reuben are both well too, thanks. They’ve gone out for the day with Roxie and Joanne, so I suspect Lila will come home with new clothes for our son.’

‘It would be rude not to, right?’ Clover laughed.

‘Absolutely.’ Ethan gestured at the stairs. ‘I’ll go and finish that second coat in the bedroom, Brooke.’

‘Wonderful, thanks, Ethan.’ Brooke nodded toward the kitchen. ‘Let’s go and put these away, Clover, then I’ll show you around. Ethan’s painting my bedroom in a beautiful dark blue. It’s so soothing in there now. I used to steer away from darker colours, but it really works.’

‘I love dark shades in rooms,’ Clover said. ‘Especially greens and blues.’

In the kitchen, Brooke placed the contents of the one bag on the table. ‘Clover, you didn’t need to do all this.’

‘Yes I did. I like making tasty meals and I thought this would come in handy today.’

‘It smells incredible.’ Brooke picked up the cheese and leek quiche. ‘Should I put this in the fridge?’

‘You can do. And the mini pasties. When we’re ready for them we can always warm them in the oven.’

Brooke put the food away then looked at the cakes. ‘Sconesandblueberry muffins. Yum!’

‘And all made with fresh eggs from my hens.’

‘I’m so grateful.’ Brooke smiled.

‘There’s some coffee in the other bag for your coffee machine.’

‘Coffee machine?’ Brooke frowned.

‘That’s right.’

‘I don’t have a coffee machine.’ Brooke shook her head. ‘Thank you for the coffee though.’

‘Wait and see,’ Clover said and there was a knock at the door.

‘Back in a moment,’ Brooke said as she went to answer the door. ‘Oh … Hello, Nolan.’
