“I fucking knew it. Franky liked to act all innocent and prudy growing up but I knew better. He needed that right monster to bring out his inner freak.”

“This is not a topic for the breakfast table.” Franky glared in our direction.

“You're right.” Edgar got to his feet and scooped the last hit of eggs on a strip of bacon and headed back toward the front. “I'll be back for dinner when it becomes appropriate.”

I broke out in a fit of laughter and Franky rolled his eyes. “Why am I friends with him again?”

“Because you don't want to go through the trouble of starting all over again, remember?”

“Ah. Right.” He sat beside me again, yanking my chair closer this time.

“And I think you keep me around to remind you of things.”

“Yeah that and because the sex is pretty decent,” he teased.

I nudged him in the chest and he laughed. I get to hear that sound all the time now. I no longer had to wait a week or for a phone call. The best part is, I got to be the one on the receiving end. I made Franky light up and smile. I was the reason he cameshaking every morning, and I'd be the reason he would do it again in an hour.

He kissed me on the neck and cheek. “You know the real reason I keep you around.”

“Because I save you from making dinner every night.”

He shook his head, brushing hair from my face.

“Hmm.” I tapped my chin. “Because I give the best massages.”

“Nope.” He pecked at my nose.

“I let you be the big spoon when we cuddle during a movie?”

“Getting closer.”

“Oh, it's because I bring you flowers.”

He tugged at my chin and his eyes held mine in place. “It's because I no longer have to pretend or try to be happy when you're around. I just am.”

“Is that all?” I grin.

“And because I love you.”

If I wasn't sitting in a chair, I'd melt into a puddle on the floor. He stared at me in awe. Love was one of those things I didn't understand before. I didn't think Leland wanted me to. I had figured it out anyway, and it wasn't until I gave the dating app one last chance. I gave us a chance.

“I love you too.” I press my lips to his. We were going to definitely be late for our picnic.

Epilogue

Franklin

Six months later

“Are you sure I can dip my feet in?” Nova asked hesitantly as he hung his feet over the dock.

“I'm sure, baby. Nothing will jump up and eat you, I promise.”

“What about bite?” His forehead wrinkled.

And this was the guy so many people were afraid of. If only they saw moments like this. Sighing, I sat beside him and took his hand in mine. “Other than me, no.” I pursed my lips as he laughed, pressing his smiling mouth against mine.

“If you're the one biting me then that's a different story.”
