“You got something to say?” she asked, seeing Dolly approach out of the corner of her eye. Mick didn’t know, but it was about to get ugly if he was still around when Dolly got here. She wouldn’t get violent, but she’d eviscerate him with words and film it for social media.

“I’m trying to be nice to you. We were good together. We could still be good together.”

LeAnn couldn’t believe she ever thought that smile he was giving her was sexy.

“You need to walk away, right now.”

“Why are you being such a bitch?”

Oh no, he did not just say that.

“I’m on my period,” she said flatly.

Mick jumped back as if she had shot him. “Oh God, Jesus Christ. That’s awful. You don’t say shit like that to a man.” He backed away from her, and then hurried away.

LeAnn snort-laughed.

“What’s so damn funny?” Dolly asked.

“Just dealing with an idiot.”

“I’ve got bad news,” Dolly said.

LeAnn sobered up immediately. “They don’t want me to ride, do they?”

“Nope.” Dolly shook her head. “They said it would take away from the announcement.”

“Shit,” LeAnn said. “They’re wrong. They may not be able to compare Muriel’s scores with the men, depending on what bull they put her on. But they could compare my score with Muriel’s. It could be the start of a friendly rivalry. It would get buzz.”

“It would,” Dolly agreed. “But they’re not on board with it. I’m sorry. Don’t worry, if you’re committed to being the best bull rider the WPRC, I’ll put everything I’ve got behind making you the most popular athlete in the event.”

“I know you will.”

“Just not today.” Dolly gave her a quick hug. “Besides, Mom and Dad are going to freak when they announce the new event.”

Guilt tugged at her. “Should I tell them I’m planning on riding?”

“No,” Dolly said. “They’ll just rile you up and you need to concentrate on your barrel racing. But you’re going to want to have the talk with them tonight. I recommend you do it before going to your training session with Dylan. That way you have a graceful way to exit the conversation if it gets heated.”

“Do you think it will?” LeAnn asked.

“Yeah,” Dolly said. “It was hard enough getting Mom on board for the broncs.”

LeAnn remembered.

“Do you want me to tell Reba? That way we can act as a united front against Mom and Dad.”

“Do you think Reba would side with us over them?”

“It doesn’t have to be an us versus them, you know,” Dolly said. “But yes, I know Reba will support you. She knows stuff like this is really what you want to do.”

LeAnn loved her sisters and felt bad for every little annoyance that she’d let creep under her skin these past couple years.

“You could tell her. But I’ll take care of Mom and Dad on my own. I do appreciate the support, though.”

Dolly sagged in relief. “Good. In that case, Reba and I are going to go out to the movies tonight. Give us a call when it’s safe to come home.”

LeAnn chuckled.
