“Good luck in the barrel-racing event.”

“Don’t need luck. I’ve got skill.” LeAnn remembered Dylan had said that to her once.

Dolly rolled her eyes.

Maybe LeAnn was a little conceited. But she didn’t need luck to score high in barrel racing. She needed luck convincing the gate man and the crew that the WPRC had authorized her to ride after Muriel. Luck and fast talking. That’s how she would do it.

“I’m going to stay here and watch Dylan,” LeAnn said.

“Okay, I’ll see you later.” Dolly was back on her phone as soon as she turned around.

LeAnn just hoped Dolly would understand. Because she was going to ride a bull tonight—regardless of what anyone said.

Chapter Nine

After Dylan’s second ride, LeAnn made sure she was out there front and center. Muriel must have been busy preparing for her ride because she wasn’t in sight.

“I’m going to ride after Muriel,” LeAnn blurted out before he could say anything.

“What?” He froze in his tracks, and stared at her in horror.

“Oh,” LeAnn said. He must not have known about Muriel. “Muriel Degas is going to be the last bull rider today. That’s how the WPRC is going to announce the new event.”

“Yeah,” Dylan said. “I heard about that last night, but I didn’t think you were going to ride as well.”

Wait, what? Distracted, LeAnn had to replay his words in her head. “You knew Muriel was going ride today? Why didn’t you tell me?” LeAnn wasn’t sure if she was hurt or pissed.

“I didn’t want you to worry about it.”

“You don’t get to make that call,” she said, identifying the emotion she was feeling as betrayal.

“I chose not to tell you so you would find out about it like everyone else and be surprised.”

“I was surprised all right. Surprised they picked your girlfriend instead of me.” Shit. She hadn’t meant to say that.

Dylan made a face. “She’s not my girlfriend.”

“She looked awfully friendly with you.”

Sighing, Dylan unhooked his chest protection. “We have a history.”

“Ancient history?” LeAnn asked.

“It’s in the past. And I’m not planning on letting history repeat itself. Why? Are you interested in a little history lesson?” Dylan stepped in closer to her and LeAnn forgot how to breathe.

Damn, she wanted to kiss him.

Focus.

“My ride. It’s all last-minute,” LeAnn said nervously, her hands shaking. She hated lying like this, but this was her shot and she had to take it. “Because it’s all still so secretive, I need your help getting me a bull.”

“I didn’t think that was going to start up so soon,” Dylan said. “A little warning would have been nice.”

LeAnn wasn’t sure what he was talking about, but she nodded. “Sorry.”

“I don’t like putting you in the arena before we could train more,” he said, his face grim. “Are you sure you need to do this?”

Was she? She swallowed hard. “It’s not the first time I’ve been on a bull. Trent Campbell trained me, remember?”
