The officer brought them back to the cell fifteen minutes later where the guy was being held. He’d snapped a picture of the man’s driver’s license when Laine asked to see his name. The officer found it odd that she didn’t know it.

The first thing he did was send the picture to Griffin. If anyone could get to the bottom of this, it was Griffin.

“You’ve got five minutes,” the officer said.

He was holding out hope Griffin could get him what he needed in that time.

“How did you get out?” Donovan Ray asked. “Or did youragentpull strings?”

Carson snorted. “Do I look like your agent?” he asked Laine.

“He thinks agent is a fancy name for pimp.”

He laughed this time. “That’s a good one,” he said.

“He can’t seem to see reason. I hoped that since he was the drunk one and I wasn’t that now he’d sobered up. Listen, Donovan. I’m willing to drop my charges of assault and attempted kidnapping.”

“What?” Donovan yelled.

“That’s right. You had my arm and you were pulling me out of the restaurant against my will. It was self-defense that I hit you when I was yanking my arm away.”

“There are cameras in the hotel bar,” Carson said. “Our attorneys will have access to them by morning.” He was positive of that. If Roark was not able to get them, Griffin would find a way. “Save yourself the embarrassment now. Laine is not who you think she is.”

“I saw another couple trying to buy her services,” Donovan said.

He looked over at the officer who was listening in on this. “So you admit you were trying to buy sex from my girlfriend?”

The man seemed to realize what was happening now. “No,” Donovan said. “It was consensual.”

“Like hell,” Laine said. He was ready to swear a lot more than that.

His phone went off and he read the text from Griffin. He leaned in close. “This is what is going to happen. You don’t know who you’re dealing with. Not me and not Laine’s family. Donovan Ray, age thirty-nine from Atlanta, Georgia. Married for thirteen years, three children, David, ten, Charlotte is eight and Lily is five. You’re in the process of filing for bankruptcy and working for a company that is on its last legs.”

“How the hell do you know those things?” Donovan asked, his face pale.

“It took me less than ten minutes in the middle of the night to get this. Imagine what I can do if I have a full day.”

“Do you really want to go down this path when we all know who is telling the truth here?” Laine asked. “The cameras will say it all once we get it. Do yourself a favor and drop it and we can all go on our merry way.”

“You’ll drop your charges if I drop mine?” Donovan asked.

“Yes,” she said.

“Fine,” Donovan said. “Just get me out of here.”

The officer came over. “Do I hear this correctly? Both of you are dropping your charges?”

“I am,” Laine said, “if he does.”

Donovan said he was too. The officer let Donovan out and they went to another room to sort out paperwork while he got Roark back on the phone to record and ensure everything was done properly.

It was over an hour later before they were back at her hotel to get her things and get a taxi to the airport.

“Egan is waiting for us.”

“I can’t believe this happened,” she said. “I didn’t want you to find out.”

That only hurt him more. “Why?”
