“She was too glued to you. As if she was trying to find you. Then you’d look at me and I’d smile back and she didn’t seem affected by it. I’m not sure. Maybe it’s more my gut than anything.”

He didn’t know what to think of this. “Do you think your father was testing me to see if I had a wandering eye?”

“Nope,” she said. “He wants to make sure you are close enough to me at all times.”

Carson shook his head. He supposed he’d have to get used to this and surprisingly he wasn’t that disappointed.

Not when he wanted to make sure Laine was taken care of as well.

“How are things going?” he asked.

“Well. I’d say another hour. I have no problem leaving early.”

“Really?” he asked, looking at his watch.

“Yep. No reason to stay to the end. I always did because I was here for the showing, but now that you’re here, I don’t want you to get bored. Unless you want to continue to talk to Deidre.”

“No,” he said. “I have plans for the night once we leave too.”

“You do?” she asked. “Tell me what they are.”

She was almost jumping in place. Her hair was in some fancy twist, her makeup was subtle but there. He knew she’d want to change and maybe do something with her hair too.

“There is something on your list you wanted to do. I took care of it.”

“You have to tell me,” she said.

“Nope,” he said. “Not until we leave. I had to pull a lot of strings for this and I think I should get bonus points.”

He wasn’t one for calling in favors, but it felt like that was all he’d done in the past week.

This time it was from Eli Bond. There was a lot of laughter behind the request, but he figured someone in the family would be able to make it happen.

“Bonus points are only given when they are deserved. Until I know what it is, I’m holding onto them. Tell me though, why did you decide to do something?”

“Because we need to get back to the fun of our relationship. As you said, we have to move past what happened last week. What better way than to tackle the thing that brought us together.”

“You’re taking me to a club to dance all night long?” she asked, silently clapping her hands in front of her chest.

“No,” he said. “Sorry about that. I’m surprised you haven’t done that already.”

“I tried it a few times and got tired out. It might be one of those things that never happens. I might be too old for it.”

“I’d hardly say either one of us is old.”

“Hang on,” she said. He stood there while she moved back to her agent, said a few words to him and then disappeared, returning with her jacket and purse. “Time to go.”

“You can’t just leave like that, can you?”

“Yep, I can and I am. Eccentric artist. No one will think anything of it. Or they can come back tomorrow. I think you’re a good sport doing this two nights in a row.”

“Who knows?” he said. “Maybe Deidre can keep me company.”

She playfully slapped his arm. “Not a chance.”

He hailed a cab, they got in and gave the address to her hotel. Once they were in their room, he was unbuttoning his shirt. “Get comfortable. You might want to let your hair down.”

“You need to tell me what is going on. Where are we going?”
