“Laine,” he said. “We haven’t spent more than three days apart in a month. How late are you with your period?”

She turned to look at him and smiled. “No fooling you.”

“How late?”

“Four days,” she said. “I haven’t taken a test. I don’t feel any different other than I’m late. It’s possible it’s in my mind more than anything. No reason to rush and take a test just yet.”

He lifted one eyebrow at her. “There are a lot of reasons to take the test.”

“Maybe I don’t want it to say negative,” she said.

She was mortified when her eyes started to fill with tears. He pulled her into his arms. “What happened to this not being stressful?”

“Guess it’s one of those things you can’t control in life,” she said.

“I’d like you to take a test,” he said. “It’d be nice to know. For your health and all.”

She snorted. “I’m perfectly healthy and a few more days won’t make a difference.”

“You’ve got a lot more patience than I do,” he said.

She felt bad about this and had to remember they were in it together.

“You want to be with me when I take the test?” she asked.

“Absolutely,” he said. “I’m going to work tonight. I won’t see you for a few days.”

Which was why she wanted to put off taking the test. She figured that would kill the time to get her to at least a week late or more.

“I don’t have a test here.”

“I can go get one,” he said. “Easy enough to buy one at a store.”

When he broke out in a silly dance she started to laugh. There was no telling him no at this point.

“It won’t be a secret if you’re noticed by someone.”

“Don’t care,” he said and rushed out the door.

She went back to making breakfast. He’d have to eat his omelet cold. Or she could hold off putting the eggs in the pan until he returned.

That’s what she did, but she had all the vegetables and meat and cheeses out.

He came almost running back in. “That was fast.”

“I didn’t see anyone. I almost went home to get a baseball hat but didn’t. I bought two. Go pee.”

“You’re lucky I drank a bottle of water while you left though I’m not sure it’ll hit this fast. It’s only been ten minutes.”

He pulled the test out of the bag and was pushing her to the bathroom, then stood in the doorway. “Watching me pee on the stick is a little too involved.”

“I’m a doctor,” he said, laughing. “I’ve seen it all.”

“You’re not seeing this,” she said and pushed him out of the way, then shut the door in his face.

She’d never been one to have performance anxiety with peeing but not even a drip was coming out.

“Do you need help?” Carson shouted.
