“Get away from the door,” she yelled back. “That’s why I can’t pee. I must have realized you were standing there listening. Go start the eggs.”

She waited a minute, then called his name again and he didn’t answer, telling her he left.

She took a few deep breaths and her bladder decided to function.

When she was done she washed her hands and went to the kitchen.

“Now we wait,” he said.

“It won’t take long. Before the eggs are even done.”

She could tell he was watching the clock, but she went about getting the plates down and putting them on the table.

After a few minutes, when the eggs were on their dishes, he turned to go to the bathroom and she ran after him. “Why can’t I see it?”

“You can’t see it before me,” she said.

They were elbowing each other out of the way laughing to get there. Both of them got to the doorway at the same time and tried to squeeze in together.

“Holy hamsters,” she said, staring at the test on the counter.

“Son of a bone,” he said.

She started to laugh. “More like son of a boner.”

She giggled at the analogy. Or maybe it was the word “pregnant” that she read.

Carson picked her up, gave her a big smacking kiss on the lips and then twirled her around until they both hit the wall in the hallway.

“I’m going to be a father,” he shouted.

“I guess that means I’m going to be a mother.”

“Are you happy?” he asked her as he set her down.

“I am. Are you?”

“Very much so.” That silly dance appeared again from him.

“Then that is all that matters,” she said.

“Why would you say that?” he asked. “Do you think anyone is going to be mad or upset? Who cares if they are.”

“I’m sure my mother is going to lecture me.”

“Your mother was pregnant before they were married.”

“But it wasn’t planned. I won’t lie and say that we didn’t plan this.” It wasn’t her way to say otherwise. “How do you think your parents are going to react?”

“Excited,” he said.

“But will they put pressure on us to get married? You’ve said before your mother is old fashioned.”

She probably shouldn’t have said that when she saw the excitement fade from his eyes. The smile was still there, but it was forced.

“No one will put pressure on us,” he said. “We’re two grown adults that make our own decisions in life. But we don’t need to tell anyone just yet. I think we wait until you go to the doctor.”

“Which means your sister will know,” she said.
