“Want to talk in private?” Avery asked her.

“Olivia, you’ve got the store, right?”

“I do,” Olivia said. “I’m here until six.”

She looked at her watch and saw it was five thirty. “That’s enough time,” she said. She grabbed Avery’s hand and pulled her to her office, which happened to be closer to where Josie was.

“Tell me what happened to your hand.”

“Beyoncé,” she said.

“Huh?” Avery asked.

“Beyoncé started to sing on my playlist after I was calling it a night on Saturday. I’d just gotten done painting.”

“And you busted a move...more like a finger?”

“Yep,” she said. “I was going at it. I wish I had a camera in my sunroom. That might have been some of my best moves to date, and then bam, hand into the wall. I’ve got a tiny break right here.” She pointed to the upper part of her pinky.

“You could have called me,” Avery said.

“I almost did until I realized it was close to midnight. I got to spend a few hours with the twins at the ER.”

“Hudson and Carson?” Avery asked.

“Yes. And it gets even better.”

She told Avery about what happened with Carson and the wheelchair. How she got white looking at her broken bone and that he was sweet about it.

“He is a doctor, so he should care,” Avery said about Carson.

“I know. But it was more. You know I’ve said how cute he is.”

“You have,” Avery said. “Move on to the email he sent you. What happened then?”

“I replied and one thing led to another. I don’t like emailing. I’d rather talk to someone. He gave me his number and I called him. Then I cooked him dinner last night. I wanted to explain why I reacted the way I had over the wheelchair.”

“You told him about your father, you said,” Avery said, rubbing her hand on Laine’s arm.

“I did,” she said. “But I wanted to explain more. You know I don’t do that. Ever.” At least when she first met someone.

“I’m sure you didn’t tell him everything. Like the guys your father hires?”

“No way,” she said. “No reason to turn him off. I just said my father finished college with his engineering degree. I mentioned a lawsuit but nothing more. It didn’t seem right to say more.”

And her father wouldn’t want her to either.

She’d never been one that bragged or brought up her wealth much in life to anyone.

When she was with a man, she wanted to make sure they were with her for her, not what she could bring to the table.

She’d bet Carson felt the same way and she’d have to find a way to get that across to him if this turned into more than the two of them being adventure buddies.

Yeah, it was going to.

She’d seen the look in his eyes when he was watching her. Probably the same look that was in her eyes.

“You’ve got a point. What else did you talk about?”
