“Who?” he asked.

“While I was at the doctor, your mother stopped in. She bought a vase for your sister.”

He laughed. “Is it purple?”

“Yes,” she said. “Why?”

“My mother knows we went on a date. I told Hudson today too. I haven’t talked to my mother since I gave her the vase, but she said before I left that Ava was going to be jealous because now my mother has even more and Ava didn’t have one yet.”

“You should have given that to Ava instead,” she said.

“I would have if I’d known that. But my mother said Ava was admiring a purple one when she was there the night Avery got engaged. I imagine my mother thought she’d make my sister happy and get to chat with you at the same time.”

“You didn’t tell me you told your mother we went on a date,” she said.

“I had to tell her how I got the vase. I wasn’t going to let her assume I bought it. Though she did at first.”

She liked that he was honest with his parents. That meant a lot to her.

“If you must know, my mother knows we’ve gone on a few dates. Of course Avery knows.”

“I told Hudson today, as I said,” he said. “Glad to know I’m not the only one making comments. On this small island someone is going to see us.”

“Is that the only reason that you told Hudson?” she asked.

“No,” he said quietly.

She’d let it go since he was working and she was too.

“I think I’ve got an idea for our date on Friday if you’re game.”

“I’m sure I will be,” he said. “What do you want to do?”

“We are going to get rain and winds Friday night. If the rain holds off and it’s just winds the waves will be higher. I was thinking maybe we could go bodysurfing.”

“With a broken finger?” he asked.

“If I tape my fingers together and hold onto the board and just kick out and then lie on it to come in on the wave it should be fine, right?”

“Do you want to risk that?” he asked.

“I’d love to try bodysurfing and the weather seems to be perfect for waves. Got any other suggestions?”

“You can get surfer mittens but I’m not sure you can find them on the island. Or get them before Friday.”

“I’ll make a few calls,” she said. Money made things move. If she had to have them brought to the docks and then take the ferry there or pay for them to be brought over she would.

“Then we can go bodysurfing if the weather is good.”

“Can’t wait to see you in a suit,” she said, laughing. A throaty laugh that was pure wicked in her mind.

“The same,” he said.

“Talk to you later, Carson,” she said and hung up on him. She wanted to leave that image in his mind so that he’d be as worked up as she was by Friday. The cool ocean water might be what she’d need to help her get through the date before she brought him back to her place.
