“What?” she asked.

“You swore. You said shit.”

“I guess I did,” she said. “I told you when it means something it slips out.”

“Hope it meant something good,” he said, moving back and letting her slide to the floor. Her legs were shaking and she had to get her balance.

“Always something good with you,” she said. “Too bad I can’t add this to my Life In The Fun art collection. But it’s going to be branded in my mind forever.”

He laughed and threaded their fingers together. “You could and gift it to me,” he said.

“Nope,” she said. “That goes along with putting sexy things in writing. We’ll just have to have the memories in our brains. No saying we can’t recreate them another time though.”

“I like the way you think,” he said.

He pulled his pants up a bit so he could go to the bathroom and she dropped her dress down. “Sorry about the marks.” Her heels had scratched his back.

“I don’t feel anything but you when we are together,” he said softly.

She kissed him lightly. “Funny how I was thinking the same thing.”

OUT IN THE OPEN

Sunday afternoon, Laine decided to call her father. It was time to let him know about Carson.

There was no reason not to and every reason to get it out in the open.

She knew in her mind she was falling in love with Carson. Maybe she’d known since he treated her so kindly in the ER and then reached out the next day.

“Hello, Laine,” her father said.

“Hi, Dad. How are you doing?”

“I’m doing well,” her father said. “Sitting on the patio and enjoying this beautiful day. How are you?”

“I’m fabulous,” she said. “I’ve got some news to share.”

There, this way nothing would stop her from saying it and her father wouldn’t cut her off with something else he had to do.

“Do you have another gallery showing coming up?” her father asked.

“I’ve got three in October,” she said. “Nothing more there. But I do have a boyfriend.”

There was some silence on the other end. “You do?”

“Yes. His name is Carson Mills. He was the radiologist working the night I broke my finger. His twin brother was the ER doctor.”

“A doctor,” her father said. “Someone that lives on the island or goes back and forth from Boston?”

Her father knew the men she’d dated. He knew the last one that was somewhat serious ended because Dawson wouldn’t come to see her on the island.

“He lives on the island,” she said. “He’s from one of the Bond family branches. Catherine’s side which has a lot of medical professionals in it.”

“Interesting,” her father said. She expected more of a response than that.

“What is so interesting about it?” she asked.
