“You’ve been there a few years. Has he always lived there? You’re just dating now? I thought you knew most of the Bond family on the island. You’ve always been one to get immersed in where you live.”

She sighed. “I’ve been here longer than him. He was in Boston before and lives here now. I’ve known who he was. I know his mother, as I worked with her when I donated for the Bond Annual Fundraiser. His mother has several pieces of my pottery also. But I’d never met Carson.”

“Have you met anyone else in the family besides his mother?”

“His father. His sister, Ava, is very close with Avery. Ava’s daughter is best friends with Josie.”

“Ahhh,” her father said.

“Now what?” she asked.

“Is this serious?”

“You’re jumping around on me. Why would you ask that?”

“Because you’ve been down the road before where you end up alone again in the end. You won’t even open yourself up to it now unless you can see more of a future.”

“Then yes, it’s serious.”

“How long have you been dating?”

“Since I broke my finger,” she said, laughing. “I cooked him dinner the next day at my house.”

“You had him in your house that soon?”

“I did.”

“What does he know about you?”

“He knows a lot about me,” she said, smiling. “He likes adventures too.”

“Good for you finding someone like that,” her father said. “But I meant what about your family life?”

This was where things always got complicated.

“He knows my parents are divorced. He knows Mom is remarried and that I lived on your property. I don’t have that part of my life be a secret.”

“Because you don’t want to be judged so you put it out there right away.”

“There is that,” she said. “But it’s more important that people know. I feel that it’s made me who I am.”

“You made you who you are,” her father argued.

They’d had this conversation more than once.

“Yes and no,” she said. “If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t have this outlook on life.”

“I don’t believe it,” her father said. “What does Carson know about me?”

“Meaning does he know what you do for a living and that you are a very wealthy man?”

“Yes,” her father said.

“He knows you went to college for engineering. He thinks you’re an engineer.”

“I am one,” her father said, laughing.

“You always will be, but that isn’t what you do now.”
