“Which is what you need in your life.”

“I just talked to Dad.”

“Did you tell him about Carson?”

“I did,” she said

“And he wants to meet your young man?”

“He does. I think he might know some of the Bond family members. When I commented on him looking into Carson he acted like there was no need.”

Her mother laughed. “Your father talks to people in the medical field all the time. I can’t believe you didn’t think he wouldn’t know someone.”

Oh my God, what if Carson’s father knew her father? It’d never come up.

Of course Connors was a very common name so there wouldn’t be much of a reason for it to.

But she knew that Carson would have told his parents some about her life.

“I need to tell Carson soon,” she said. “Now I’m worried he might know.”

“Does it matter if he does?”

“I don’t want him to think I was keeping it from him.”

“If anyone understands what it’s like to be wanted for money or a name, I’d say it’s someone from your boyfriend’s family. Don’t judge what you don’t know.”

“You’re right. I’ll call him and talk to him. We don’t see a lot of each other during the week and now I want to get it off my chest. I’m not sure I can wait.”

“It’s the best way to do things,” her mother said. “Good luck and let me know how you make out.”

“I don’t normally feel as if I need luck, but this time I think I do.”

She hung up with her mother and rather than call Carson, she decided to surprise him and visit.

WHY I LOVE YOU

“You haven’t been gone that long,” Carson said when he opened the door. “Did you miss me? It’s my irresistible charm, isn’t it?”

“It is that,” she said. “I’m not bothering you, am I?”

“You’ve been bothering me since the day you ended up breaking your finger,” he said, tugging on her hair.

Laine was worried for nothing. She knew that now.

“There is something I need to tell you,” she said.

He started to rub his hands together. “You’ve got a list like mine that is secret and private and you’re going to recite it by memory rather than type it up?”

She grinned. “Maybe another time.”

“Okay,” he said. “Come sit. This is serious. I can tell by your face. I’ll stop joking. What’s going on?”

“I told my father about you not that long ago.”

He tried not to be hurt that she hadn’t said anything before now. “That’s good.”
