“You would have thought it was with the way that Townes ran off when I told him that you weren’t feeling well yesterday,” Saffron says with a laugh.

“He what?” I ask, and she giggles.

“I went into Nosh to grab a coffee before I opened yesterday, and he stopped me and asked about you. I told him that you weren’t working because you weren’t feeling well, and he ran out of there like his butt was on fire,” she tells me.

“Oh,” I respond, not sure what else to say to that.

“He’s so into you,” Ginger says with a grin, and I smile weakly.

“I don’t know about that.”

“Oh, trust me, he is,” Saffron says.

“I would love to have a big, strong, sexy man who followed me around like a puppy dog,” Ginger adds, and jealousy spikes inside of me.

“What did you want me to work on today?” I ask, hoping to change the subject.

“I just need to finish up inventory and scan in those new books,” Saffron says, and I nod and hurry back to the counter to get to work.

I can feel my friends’ eyes on me as I go, but I ignore them. I need to figure out how I feel about Townes before I start adding in other people’s opinions.

I try to push thoughts of Townes out of my head as I grab the first book and get to work.

Townes

“Where are you taking her?”Xavier asks me, his voice sounding far away, and I know he must have put me on speakerphone.

“We’re going over to Rosewood. She likes Mediterranean food, and there’s supposed to be a good restaurant there.”

“How do you know that she likes Mediterranean food?” He asks.

“She’s always looking at recipes on her phone from that region.”

“Stalker.”

“Like you didn’t know everything about Olive before you two started dating,” I challenge him, and he doesn’t respond.

“Good luck tonight,” he tells me sincerely.

Xavier and I have been best friends since boot camp. We were both in the military together, but when Xavier got shot on our last deployment, we decided to get out. I followed him back to Wolf Valley since I didn’t know where else to go.

I’ve never really had a home or a supportive family. Xavier and this place are the closest that I’ve ever gotten to either of those things. Until I met Mira, that is. Now, wherever she is feels like home.

“Thanks. I’ll talk to you tomorrow,” I say.

“See you.”

We both hang up, and I take one last look at myself in the mirror, smoothing my hands over my button-down shirt and brush my dark hair back off my forehead. It’s time for me to go pick her up, and I smile as I grab my keys and head out the door.

I bought a cabin a few miles from downtown Wolf Valley when we moved back here. It’s a few miles away from Xavier’s place and only ten minutes from Mira’s apartment.

When I park outside of Mira’s place, she’s already out front, and I hurry to jump out of my Jeep and open the door for her.

“I would have come up to get you,” I tell her with a smile as she heads my way.

“Oh, I had to drop something off at the bookstore for Saffron. I was just walking back and saw your Jeep so I waited.”
