His tone has thoroughly pissed me off. I don’t know what switch flipped, but he doesn’t have a right to speak to me like that. “I never said it was. You didn’t ask first.”

“I let you come and this is the thanks I get?” Troy stands and storms to my front door, irrationally pissed off. “Good luck with the your dissertation approval… Oh, and I sure as fuck am not going to your brother’s wedding with you.” He leaves, slamming the door behind him.

I breathe a sigh of relief that he’s gone but cringe at the thought of my degree being in jeopardy, on top of dealing with family back home solo… all because I couldn’t handle some boot fucking and a foot fetish.

Hunched over with elbows on my knees, my face falls into my hands. I’m not sure how the hell I got here, but I need to click my heels three times, and make this all go away.

I do what I should’ve done a long time ago. I grab my phone and send a quick text to the one person who understands me.

Can I see you tomorrow?

?. . .?

January 27th

Since things have been slow at the lodge, I’ve been given the weekend off. I’m tempted to drive to Calgary to see Beth but I’m not sure what to make of our relationship—she’s so hot and cold with me. There’s no point in getting my hopes up that she wants more than whatever the hell it is we are.

Fuck buddies?

Friends with benefits?

She texted me last night that she was hoping to see me today. It didn’t feel like her fun “you up” texts; something feels off. I have to be back in Coal’s Sunday night for Myles’ surprise bachelor party, so I shouldn’t consider it.

Fuck it. I’m going to see her.

No, I should just turn around and head back home.

Despite my better judgement, I grab my keys and head out. As I pass the town welcome sign, there’s an incoming text from her.

Beth

I’ll be there in 20.

Don’t tell my parents I’m in town.

I find a safe place to pull over and call. Beth picks up on the first ring. “Hey, are you home?”

“No,” I laugh, “I’m headed to Calgary.”

“Oh,” she sighs.

I let her squirm for a moment, unable to wipe the stupid grin off my face. “To see you,” I finally add.

“What? But I’m going to Coal’s to seeyou. Where are you? I can turn around.”

“By the welcome sign. I pulled over to call you.”

“Stay there,” she rushes out and hangs up.

Five minutes later, Beth’s car parks behind mine. I zip my coat and exit the car to greet her. “Couldn’t just meet me at my place?” She doesn’t answer, instead closing the distance and wrapping her arms around my middle in a tight hug. I envelop her in mine and kiss the top of her head. “What’s going on?” I say against her hair, breathing in her eucalyptus shampoo.

Beth tilts her chin to look at me, resting it on my chest. “I don’t know,” she replies earnestly. There’s a softness to her voice that I’m not used to. Something happened, but I’m not going to press further right now while we’re out here in the cold. I’m about to suggest we go back to my place when she lifts onto her toes and kisses me. Unlike my last date, she lets me tease her, taste her, fucking devour her.

“You don’t taste like pussy,” she whispers against my lips.

“What?” I laugh, not breaking away from her.
