“What?” she echos, as if she didn’t just suggest my mouth typically tastes like a cunt.

I sigh and pull back an inch, already missing kissing her. “You said I don’t taste like pussy, do you want me to? I’ll throw you in the backseat of the car and make you come all over my face, then make out with you for an hour. Just say the word.”

Beth rests her forehead on my chest and groans. “No… I mean, yes, that would be fucking amazing.” She returns her gaze to me. “Can we not talk about it?”

I nod and pull her closer, kissing her forehead. “How long are you here for?”

“I need to be back in Calgary on Monday.”

“Perfect. Then you’re mine until Sunday night.”

She frowns. “Why Sunday night?”

“Your future brother-in-law’s bachelor party.” Her eyes widen. “Yeah, I know. I might see if I can get Gabe to do it.” He had a bit too much fun over Christmas with a bachelorette party but I don’t have to worry about him hooking up with someone’s mom for this one. Beth shivers in my arms, so I walk her back to her car, and open the door to slide in. “Drive to my place. I’ll follow you; the roads are a bit icy today.”

“Alright,” she replies with a nod. I kiss her one more time before closing the door and walking back to my car.

I’m not sure what’s going on with Beth, but at this point, I’ll take anything she’s willing to give me—even if it means I’m still friend-zoned after this weekend.

?. . .?

January 28th

Iwake up to Beth’s legs tangled with mine. Her arm is slung over my stomach, clutching my side, and her head’s resting on my chest. We spent yesterday on the couch, eating the remnants of my fridge, and watching trash television. I know she doesn’t want to talk about what’s going on but something is definitely wrong. Last night was the first night we slept together without ‘sleeping’ together. While I love waking up next to her, I want to know why she’s here.

Her phone on the bedside table vibrates. I close my eyes, savouring the feel of her wrapped up with me, but it buzzes again. Beth shifts and I don’t want the noise to wake her. I open one eye and reach for her phone to turn it off. As I’m pressing the power button, I spot a message preview on the front screen.

Fuckboy Troy

I’m sorry.

I shouldn’t jump to conclusions; Troy could be anyone. As the phone screen begins to darken, another message appears just before it goes black.

Fuckboy Troy

I love you.

Conclusions officially jumped to.Is that why she came this weekend?

I carefully slide out from under her. Sitting at the edge of my bed, I rub my hands down my face, trying to make sense of it. The weather is shit today; a run is out of the question. I get up and make my way to the ensuite bathroom. After turning on the shower and letting the water heat, I brace myself on the counter and groan. “She’s not yours,” I tell my reflection in the mirror. As much as I like Beth, I won’t get involved with her if she’s seeing someone else.

With the water now hot, I step in the shower and wash away my disappointment. I really thought she was here for me, not running from whoever the hell Fuckboy Troy is. The water beats down on me until it’s turned cold. There’s still a chance that I’m misreading it and I should give her the benefit of the doubt. He could be anyone from an ex years ago to someone she met last night.

I turn off the shower, step out, and dry off. Slipping on a pair of clean boxer briefs and a pair of gray sweatpants, I make my way back into the bedroom. Beth’s still sound asleep, and lets out a contented sigh as I slide back into bed. I jostle her shoulder to wake her and she mumbles something incoherent but stirs.

I try again. “It’s too early,” she grumbles and resumes her position tangled up with me.

“Hey, Beth, I turned off your phone so you could sleep. There were a few messages you should check. It might be someone important.”

“My mom doesn’t know I’m here,” she says, muffled with her lips pressed to my pecs. “Whatever it is, it’s not important.”

“You should check it,” I insist. If she has a boyfriend, and she only came to Coal’s for me because they broke up, I want no part of it.

Beth groans and sits up as I hand her the phone. She turns it on and a moment later she frowns and mutters, “What the fuck?” Her eyes meet mine but quickly return to her phone. “Did you… did you see this?”

There’s no point in lying. “Yeah.”
