His hands gripped her arms, his silver eyes swirling with emotions he could not possibly explain.

“I want you.”

“You have me.”

Hauling her into his arms again, he kissed her fiercely, hands framing her face.

“Oh, Christ!” He whispered, finally letting her go. “I have to go.” Turning on his heels, he walked out, leaving her standing there, her heart pounding, her body trembling.

Chapter 14

She was humming as she tidied the kitchen and found herself sipping from his coffee cup. “Oh Lord,” She whispered with a laugh. “Girl, you got it bad.” Finishing the coffee, she finished wiping the counter.

Her phone rang as she was about to go and tackle the laundry.

“Hey.”

“Hey. I am just around the corner, grabbing coffee and some pie. Join me.” It was not a request.

“I was not planning on going out-. “

“I will order the pecan; they serve the best.” Before she could hiss at him, he hung up.

“Damn him.” Propping her hands on her hips, she glared at the phone. Knowing her brother, he would not take no for an answer.

Turning out of the kitchen, she went upstairs to put something on.

He was lounging back against the red faux leather of the booth and flirting lightly with the buxom, rosy-faced owner of the café.

“Ah, here she is.” Bertha beamed as she walked in half an hour later. “Honey, you look more beautiful every time I see you.”

“And you are looking as robust as ever.” She allowed herself to be embraced by the woman.

“Your handsome brother has entertained me for ten minutes, keeping me from my other customers. Go and take a seat, sweetie, and let me send over something for you.” She tutted as she patted Delores’ arm. “Too thin, girl.” She added before bustling away.

“There had better be a good reason for you to drag me away from home while I was doing laundry.” She told him with a little sting as she slid in.

“We will wait until – Ah, here comes Connie.” He gave the girl a dazzling smile that had her blushing as she brought over the coffee and pie.

“Call if you need anything else.”

“She is aware that you are married, isn’t she?”

“She is.” His smile faded as he looked at her. “I worked last night and had to pass through your neighborhood. A tip from a CI had us doing surveillance. I was passing there again this morning and saw a car parked inside the driveway and a man coming out the front door looking like Deacon Manchester.”

She busied herself with the coffee and the pie. “I am surprised you did not stop.”

“I wanted to, but I had some reports to make and someone to meet.”

“And instead of going home to your lovely wife, you decided to stop here, and what? Grill me?”

“I decided just to stop here, indulge my caffeine craving, and wait for an explanation.” He gave her an assessing look. “Things heating up between you and the billionaire?”

“And if I say it’s none of your business, will you back off?”

“You know me better than that.” Leaning back, he picked up his cup and sipped, eyeing her over the rim. “Are you using protection?”

Her eyes flashed at him. “That is none of your damn business.”
