“You are my sister- “

“That does not give you the right to be so intrusive.”

His eyes glittered. “I am looking out for you.”

“I can do that on my own.” She hissed.

“I did some digging.”

She went still, the anger rising. “You go too far.”

“I dug a little deeper, and I will not apologize.” He told her coolly. “The guy is dangerous.”

She laughed, a short, unamused sound as she stared at him. “Dangerous as in- “

“His wife made complaints against him.”

“What sort of complaints?”

“He threatened her.”

“Be more specific.”

“She was running around with men, yes, but she filed a complaint saying that he was threatening to make her life a living hell if she did not get out of his house.”

“She cheated on him!”

“You don’t know him, Del. The man is ruthless.”

“In business.”

“He has enemies.”

This time, the laugh was genuine. “Tell me which man of his ilk does not have enemies. He takes over companies, so there is a chance he will collect a few enemies along the way.”

"There were several lawsuits against the company." He pulled out his device and turned it to show her. "I have been looking at his holdings. Cargo ships, apartment buildings, a prominent radio station, yachts, a private plane, hotels, restaurants, and so on. A villa in France and a vineyard in Tuscany. He is a very powerful man."

"I am aware." She was damned if she was going to show how shaken she was. Or how she was beginning to see that he was right. She did not know Deacon because he had not shared one bit of himself with her. What they had was just physical.

"He is never going to offer you marriage." Her brother continued.

"Who says I am after a proposal?" She asked him sharply.

"The Del I knew before would not have been angling for one. But you have changed." he pointed out.

"I know what I am doing."

"And I do not want to see you hurt."

"Too late. And you are one to talk. You gave Lori a run before you finally gave her a chance. You went as far as to sleep with someone else while you were seeing her just to make a damn point."

He stared at her as he put away his device. "And I ended up hurting her—something I will always regret. I was a moron and behaved like a damn child just because of her money. I told myself I was the man and supposed to be the provider. I almost destroyed a good thing. But Deacon Manchester is in a league of his own."

"Do you think I don't know that?" She cried softly. "I was doing my job, happy with my career, and never dreamed this would happen to me." She heaved out a breath. "I am hopelessly in love with him, David, and nothing will change that."

"Oh, Del." He reached for her hand, and she allowed it.

"He spent the night and wants me to come to his place tonight."
