“And if they find Troy, you won’t go back to him?”

“No.” She shudders. “Never.”

Someone knocks on the door and Tara runs over to open it. “Sorry. I forgot to come get you.”

“Do you need more time?” a man says.

“No, come in.” Tara looks back at me as the old guy from the diner comes into my room. “Jake, Mr. Daley is here.”

“It’s Martin,” he says, smiling at me. “I keep telling her to use my first name.”

“After I left the diner, I realized I never got your name,” I say to him. “So do you want me to call you Martin?”

“Yes, and I’m here to tell you that the job is still yours if you want it.”

“I do, but I may not be able to start for a while.”

“Yes, I understand. I was talking to that friend of yours, Sean, and he said he’d be willing to fill in for you until you’re better. Are you okay with that?”

“Sure. Sean could use the money and he’s good at fixing stuff.”

“Then I guess it’s all settled. I’ll work out the arrangements with him and remain in contact with you to see how you’re coming along.” He folds his arms over his chest. “What about your school work? Will you be able to keep up?”

He sounds like a dad, the good kind, like other people have. My dad didn’t care if I even went to school.

“I’ll be able to get my assignments online,” I tell him. “I’ll just need my laptop.”

“Should we go there today and pick it up?” Martin says to Tara.

“I could ask his roommate to bring it here.”

“What else needs to be done?” Martin says to me.

“I should let my professors know I won’t be in class this week.”

He nods. “I’ll take care of it.”

“Why are you doing this? You don’t even know me.”

“I know enough. I’ve been talking to your brother out in the waiting room. He doesn’t want you falling behind at school because of this. I told him I’d do what I can.” He smiles. “You got a good brother. He cares a lot about you. And from what I hear, he’s a damn good football player.”

“He’s the best player on the team. He loves football. He wants to coach someday.”

“Yes, he mentioned that. It’s a shame he’ll miss that interview.”

“What interview?”

“For that school in Florida. The coaching job?”

“He didn’t tell me about that.”

“Oh. Perhaps I wasn’t supposed to say anything.”

“It’s tomorrow,” Tara says. “Dean cancelled it.”

As she says it, Dean comes into the room with Brook.

“I hear you got a job,” Dean says as he comes over to me.
