“I hear you got an interview.”

Martin looks at Dean. “Sorry. I thought he knew.”

“Dean, you can’t miss the interview,” I tell him. “You want to be a coach, and this is your chance.”

“I already told the guy I wouldn’t be there. I probably wouldn’t have gotten the job anyway. They were interviewing a lot of people.”

“How long are you and Brook going to stay here?”

“We haven’t decided. We’re going to wait and see how you’re doing.”

“You guys can’t miss school. And you have football practice.”

“Why don’t you stop worrying about us and put your energy toward getting better?”

“When am I getting out of here?”

“We don’t know. They said you’ll be here at least a few more days.”

“And when you leave,” Brook says, “you’ll be going to stay at Danny’s house.”

“I can’t go back to the dorm?”

“Not yet. You’ll need someone to take care of the wound and make sure it doesn’t get infected.” Brook smiles a little. “That’s a lot to ask your roommate to do. Rob almost got sick just thinking about it. Danny’s mom is a much better choice.”

“I should get going,” Martin says to me. “Let you be with your family.” He turns to Dean and Brook. “It was good meeting you both.”

“You too,” Dean says. “You got my number, so stay in touch. Let me know how he’s doing.”

“Will do.” Martin looks over at Tara. “Anytime you need a ride, just let me know. I got nothing but time on my hands and I don’t like you riding that bus at night.”

She smiles. “Thanks, Martin.”

When he’s gone, Dean says, “He seems like a nice guy. Even though he was a lawyer.”

“Hey, not all lawyers are bad,” Brook says. She looks at Tara. “My dad’s a lawyer. He’s not Dean’s biggest fan.”

“He hates me,” Dean says. “But I’m over it.”

“Yeah, I can tell,” I joke. “At least her mom likes you.”

“That’s debatable,” he says.

“She likes you,” Brook says, rolling her eyes.

“We need to get going,” Dean says. “The nurse said you need to rest so we’re going to head out. Go get something to eat.”

“Are you going home?” I say to Tara.

“She’s coming with us,” Dean says. “We’ll go eat, then come back.”

“Thanks,” I say to Dean.

He nods, knowing I’m thanking him for including Tara. He doesn’t know I love her, but he knows how much I like her, and I think he can tell that we got back together.

This is going to be a new start for Tara and me. Troy won’t be getting in the way anymore. I really hope they find him. Tara won’t be able to relax until they do. I won’t either.
