“Tara? You said she was just a friend.”
“She is. This isn’t a date. We’re just having lunch. I told you she lives close to campus.”
“Yeah, but she’s dating Troy.”
“It’s not going to last. She’s breaking up with him.”
“When?”
“I don’t know. Soon.”
“Does he know you two are having lunch?”
“I don’t know. And I don’t care. What difference does it make? I can have lunch with her.”
“Have you seen her since that day you went to her place?”
“Yeah, I saw her last night. She tore one of her work shirts so I showed her how to fix it. Remember when we used to have to sew shit because we didn’t have money to buy new clothes?”
“So you fixed her shirt and then left?”
“Yeah, basically.”
“Meaning you stayed there. After you fixed her shirt.”
“Only for like an hour. What’s the big deal?”
“She has a boyfriend. A boyfriend with a temper that’s at least as bad as mine used to be. Probably worse if he’s drunk.”
“He didn’t know I was over there.”
“He could find out.”
“It doesn’t matter. They have an open relationship.”
“Yeah, and it only applies to him, not her. That’s how guys like him work. Everything’s about them and whattheywant.”
“She’s not going to stay with him. We talked about it last night and she said she just needs time to figure out how to end it with him.”
“Jake, it’s never going to happen. If she wanted to break up with him, she wouldn’t need time to figure it out. She’d just do it.”
“I didn’t ask for your advice.” I pull into the parking lot of Tara’s building. “I like spending time with her. I’m not letting Troy tell me I can’t.”
“Did you sleep with her?”
I’m surprised by the question and don’t answer right away.
“Fuck,” Dean mutters. “You did, didn’t you? You slept with her.”
“So what if I did? They have an open relationship. She can be with whoever she wants.”
“You know that’s not true. You know Troy only made that arrangement for himself. So he could be with other girls. If he found out you were sleeping with his girlfriend, I don’t even want to think about what he’d do to you.”
“He’s not going to find out. And she’s not going to stay with him.” I’m parked now with the engine off. “I’m at her apartment. I need to go.”
“End this. Now. Do not do anything more with her until she breaks up with Troy.”
“Yeah, got it.”
