“You don’t think there’s a chance you’ll get back together?”

“No. And I’m okay with that. It wouldn’t have worked with us being so far apart.”

“You sound like you’re already over her. I’m surprised. I thought it would take longer.”

“I did too, but then I realized that high school relationships usually don’t last. You and Brook are the exception. It doesn’t work out that way for most people.”

“It’s good you’re feeling better. I just thought you’d still be missing her. You guys dated a long time.”

“Yeah, I know, but it was time for it to end.”

“You’re doing a lot better than Danny. He’s still a mess from his breakup with Chelsea.”

“I thought he just went to her place and they hooked up.”

“They didn’t. Chelsea told Brook nothing happened. She said they just talked and then he left.”

“So they’re not back together?”

“No. And he’s a mess. Again. He was doing better, but seeing her again put him right back where he was, missing her and being depressed that he’s not with her. I kind of thought you’d be the same way about Haley.”

“I’ve been too busy to think about it, I guess.”

“Have you met anyone? Made any friends?”

“No, but it’s only been a few days since we talked. I’m not going to make friends that fast.”

“What about Sean and the guys? Have you been back to see them?”

“Not since Sunday. I might go there this weekend and watch football.”

“Or you could stay on campus and go to the game. It’s a home game. I looked it up.”

“I know it’s a home game,” I say, annoyed that he’s butting into my life. “But if I’d rather go see Sean, then that’s what I’m going to do.”

“Would you just consider going to the game? It’s a good way to meet people.”

“I’ll consider it if you’ll consider living your own life instead of trying to live mine.”

“I’m looking out for you. I don’t feel good about you going to the old neighborhood. I have nothing against Sean. I think it’s good you two are friends again, but why can’t you meet him somewhere? Or have him come see you on campus?”

“Do you know how far that is? He doesn’t have a car that works. He’d have to take the bus, which takes forever to get here.” I stop at a light, almost at Tara’s apartment. “Dean, I need to go. I’m meeting someone in a few minutes.”

“Is this someone a girl?” he asks with a smile in his voice. “Is that why you’re already over Haley?”

“I’m not talking about this.”

“So itisa girl. Is it someone from class?”

“I’m hanging up now.”

“Jake, come on. Just tell me. I think it’s great you found someone.”

“You wouldn’t if I told you who it was.”

“Why? Who is it?”

“Tara.” As soon as I say it, I wish I hadn’t.
