“How about parties?” Leo asks. “Are they like those frat parties you see in movies?”

“I’m not in a fraternity so I wouldn’t know. The only party I went to was kind of boring.”

“So college sucks,” Sean says. “I knew it was a scam. What a waste of money.”

“What time are you making the food?” Leo asks Sean.

“Later. I’ll get the grill going when Troy gets here.”

“Troy’s coming over?” I ask.

“Yeah, he said around one, but it depends on how long he takes with Tara. He hasn’t seen her all week so he might want more alone time with her, if you know what I mean.”

I feel like I’m going to be sick. She was with me this morning and now she’s going to be with Troy? That’s wrong in so many ways. How can she be okay with this?

“Is Troy seeing anyone else?” I ask. “I know you said something about them having an open relationship, but is he really going out with other girls?”

“Yeah, he was with someone last night.” Sean looks at Leo. “What was her name? Rina? Riley? I can’t remember.”

“You’re not even close,” Leo says. “It was Tracy. Where’d you get Rina from?”

“I think that’s the girl he met at the gas station. Or maybe not. I suck at remembering names.”

“Why is Troy dating Tara if he’s got all these other girls?” I ask.

“Because she’s hot,” Leo says, staring at the football game on TV. “Did you see that? It should’ve been a penalty and they didn’t throw a flag. Those refs don’t know shit.”

“That’s why he’s dating her?” I ask. “Because she’s hot?”

“And good in bed,” Sean says, his eyes on the game. “At least that’s what Troy says. I think that’s the main reason he keeps her around. I don’t know why she puts up with him. She could do a lot better.”

“Have you told her that?”

“No. I’m not getting involved in that shit.” He leans forward to watch the next play, then throws his hands up. “Fuck! That should’ve been a touchdown!”

“You got money on this?” I ask.

“Yeah, but not a lot. I only put ten in.” He looks over at me. “What time’s Dean playing today?”

“It’s an afternoon game. I think it’s at two.”

“You guys talk much?”

“He calls a few times a week, but I usually don’t answer. He still thinks he can tell me what to do, which is annoying.”

I haven’t talked to Dean since last Tuesday. He’s called, but I won’t pick up, knowing he’ll ask about Tara. I’d lie and tell him Ihaven’t seen her, but he probably wouldn’t believe me and then I’d get another lecture about how I need to stay away from her.

Someone bangs on the door.

Sean gets up. “Troy’s here.”

Shit, I was hoping I wouldn’t see him. I was going to make up an excuse to leave before he got here.

“I need some whiskey,” I hear Troy say as he comes into the house.

“All I got is beer,” Sean says.

“Fuck, are you serious?” Troy says. “Babe, go get me some whiskey.”
