I look back and see Tara standing next to Troy. I wasn’t expecting her to be here. I thought he would’ve used her, then sent her home. Now I really feel sick, seeing Troy with his arm around her. She’s got on sunglasses that are way too big for her face. They must be Troy’s.

“I don’t have my ID,” she says, glancing at me. “Hey, Jake.”

“Hey,” I mutter. “Hey, Troy.”

“Sanders.” He smirks. “What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be at your fancy college, hanging out with your rich friends?”

“I invited him,” Sean says. “And stop being an ass. He gave us beer money.”

“Yeah, because he’s rich. Sanders, go take your money and get me some whiskey.”

“I don’t have money. I’m not rich. Why do you keep saying that?”

“Only rich people go to college,” he says, going to the kitchen.

“My scholarship pays for college. I wouldn’t be going there if it didn’t.”

I glance at Tara, who’s standing behind the couch, her arms hugging her chest like she’s uncomfortable. I am too. It’s awkward being here with her when she’s with Troy.

I look back at him and see him taking a beer from the fridge. “Sean, where’s your uncle keep the good stuff?”

“Who knows? He doesn’t tell me.”

“Then search the house. It’s gotta be here somewhere.”

“Just drink the beer and shut up,” Sean says.

Troy comes over to the couch and sits down between Leo and me. “What’s HIS problem?” he says to Leo.

“I don’t know,” Leo says, staring at the TV. “I’m trying to watch the game.”

“When’s the last time you got laid?” Troy says to Sean.

“None of your damn business,” Sean mutters.

“That long, huh?” Troy laughs. “That explains why you’re in a bad mood.”

“I’m not in a bad mood. I just get tired of you complaining every time you come over.”

“Troy, I’m going to head out,” Tara says.

“Yeah, whatever,” he mumbles.

“What’s with the sunglasses?” Sean says to her.

“I fell,” she says, pushing the glasses up. “I’m just covering up the bruise.”

“You fell?” I look back at her. “When?”

“When she was at my house,” Troy says, answering for her. “Clumsy bitch.”

“What happened?” I ask Tara. “How’d you fall?”

“Why the fuck does it matter?” Troy says, glaring at me. “Why all the questions?”

“Jake, I’m fine,” Tara says. “It’s like Troy said. I was just being clumsy. I should go. The bus is leaving soon.”

“You sure you don’t want to stay?” Sean says to her. “We got enough food.”
