“I’m just sitting here,” I say. “It’s not entertaining.”

“It is to me. You make all these faces when you’re thinking.” She smiles. “It’s sexy to see your brain work that hard.”

“You’re weird.” I toss my book aside and pin her down on the couch. “But I still love you.”

“Hey.” She laughs as I kiss her neck. “You’re supposed to be studying.”

“I need a break.”

“How much longer until you’re done?”

“I don’t know. Maybe another thirty minutes?”

“Finish up. Then we’ll do this.”

I let out a sigh. “You’re really going to make me wait?”

“I think you can make it.”

“I don’t think so, but if that’s what you want.” I give her a kiss, then move back to my spot. I pick up my book and continue reading the chapter.

“Jake.”

I look over at Tara and see her smiling. “Yeah?”

“I really love you.”

“I love you too.”

“That was it. You can go back to studying.”

I laugh. She’s always making me laugh. The other day I realized that I’ve never felt this good. This happy. Everything in my life is finally working out. I’m in college. I’m doing well in my classes. I like my roommate. I’m in love with this great girl. I still need to get a job, but I will eventually. Maybe I could get a job at the restaurant where Tara works. She quit the pizza place and is working at a diner. She doesn’t get free pizza anymore, but she’s making more money. If I worked there too, I’d make money and get to see my girlfriend.

She’s not officially my girlfriend, but that’s how I think of her. I can’t wait to be able to call her that and tell people she’s my girlfriend. Troy needs to get back here so she can break up with him. She won’t do it over the phone. She wants to wait and tell him in person.

When I’m finished studying, I toss my book on the table. “Okay, I’m done. Get over here.”

She laughs. “I’m not ready yet.”

“I’m done studying. That was the deal.”

“In a minute.” She climbs onto my lap, facing me. “So I was thinking about what you said.”

“About what?”

“Getting my GED. But I might need some help studying for the test.”

“I can help you. When do you want to start?”

“I haven’t decided. I haven’t gotten that far.”

“So what changed your mind? Why do you want to do this?”

“Because of you. Seeing how good you’re doing after all that you’ve been through made me think maybe I could do something too. Something more than being a waitress my whole life.”

“You could do anything you want.”

“I wouldn’t say that, but—”
