“Why not? Why not just go for what you want?”

“Because I’m not good at anything. And I’m always messing up. Troy says I’m lucky I can keep a job.”

“Why are you listening to Troy? He’s the last person you should be taking advice from. He’s the one who can’t keep a job. That’s why he’s working for his uncle. That’s the only person who would hire him.”

A text alert goes off on her phone. “Speaking of Troy.”

“He texted you?”

She turns her phone so I can see the screen. The text reads,Coming back next week. Missed you, babe. Let’s hook up.

It’s good he’s coming back. She can tell him to get lost and we can finally be a real couple.

“Are you going to text him back?” I ask.

“Not right now.” She sets her phone down.

“You’re going to tell him, right? You’ll tell him it’s over?”

She nods. “As soon as he’s back.”

I kiss her. “Are we done talking now?”

“Yeah, I’ll meet you in the bedroom. I need a drink of water.”

As I go into her room, my phone rings. It’s Sean. I almost don’t answer, but I’m curious why he’s calling. He always texts, which makes me wonder if he’s calling because something bad happened.

“Hey, what’s up?” I answer.

“I haven’t seen you for a while. I was calling to see you if you want to come over tomorrow and watch a game. Troy’s still gone so it’ll just be Leo and me, and a few girls.”

“Who are the girls?”

“Nobody you know. Leo met them at work and invited them over.”

Leo got a job as a busboy at an Italian restaurant. He started last week, according to the texts he sent me.

“I can’t make it.”

“Why not? What are you doing?”

“I’m busy. I already made plans.”

“Doing what? Studying? I guarantee you’ll have a better time here, especially when you see these girls. Leo showed me their pictures online. They’re really hot, and one of them is in college. We decided you can take her since you’re both smart.”

Tara walks in. “Did you want some water? Or I could get you something else.”

I shake my head and point to the phone. “Sean, I need to go. I’ll call you later.”

“Who are you with?”

“Nobody.”

“I heard a girl talking. Who is she?”

“Just someone from class. We were talking when you called.”

“It sounded like Tara.”
