“He didn’t,” Sean says. “It’s from a box. You just heat it up.”

“I’m leaving,” Mick says, passing by us on his way to the door.

When he’s gone, Sean says to me, “So what’s going on?”

“What do you mean?”

“I never hear from you anymore. And when I text you, you don’t text me back.”

“Yeah, I do. It just takes me a while.”

“Is it a girl?” Leo asks, his eyes on the TV. “You dating someone?”

“No,” I say, which isn’t really a lie since Tara and I aren’t officially dating. “Speaking of girls, I just heard from my ex.”

“The one from Texas?” Sean asks.

“Yeah, she’s in Kansas now. She called to get back together with me.”

“And what’d you tell her?”

“That I’m not interested. If she really wanted me, she wouldn’t have broken up with me. I’m guessing she spent the past month dating other guys, realized how good she had it with me, and now she wants me back.”

“So you told her to get lost?”

“I didn’t use those words, but basically, yeah. I told her it was over and we’re not getting back together.”

“Did she get mad?”

“She started crying. I don’t know if it was real or if she was faking it. Either way, it didn’t make me change my mind. Since we broke up, I realized our relationship was all one-sided. I did everything for her and she did nothing for me. She always got her way so she was surprised when I didn’t agree to get back together with her.”

“Did you tell her you went out with someone else?” Sean asks.

I look at him. “What are you talking about?”

“The girl I heard when I called you. Who is she?”

“I told you, she’s just a girl from my class. I’m not dating her.”

“Good, because April will be here soon and Leo told her you’re single.”

So those girls are still coming over. This is going to be awkward. Leo and Sean are going to be watching me, expecting me to flirt with April. I’ll just have to tell them she’s not my type and that I’m not interested.

“What else did you tell her?” I ask Leo.

“I don’t remember. She knows you go to college and that you used to live around here.”

The doorbell rings and Sean gets up. “That’s them.”

Leo grins at me. “You’re gonna like her. She’s really hot. I’d date her myself, but she wants a guy who’s in college.”

Three girls walk in, two brunettes and a blonde. The dark-haired girls are really short and look like they’re still in high school. The blonde girl is tall and thin and looks a year or two older than me.

“Hey, Leo,” the blonde girl says.

“Hey.” Leo gets up from the couch. “This is Jake.” He motions to me. “The guy I told you about.”

She smiles at me. “Hi, I’m April.”
