She’s really pretty and has a nice smile. If I wasn’t with Tara, I might go out with this girl. But my heart’s with Tara so being with April, even if we’re just watching football together, seems wrong.

Leo introduces the other two girls as Marie and Liz. Marie sits on Leo’s lap and kisses him. I guess they’re already a couple. Sean didn’t mention that on the phone. Liz sits next to Sean and he puts his arm around her. Are they a couple too? So April’s here just for me? I knew this was a setup, but I didn’t think it’d be so obvious. I need to find a way out of this before Sean and Leo take off with their girls and leave me alone with April.

“You want to get something to drink?” April asks me.

“Um, no. I’m good.”

She nods and looks around for a place to sit. There’s another recliner but it’s on the other side of the couch, several feet away from mine.

“You like football?” I ask, hoping we can just watch the game and not talk.

“Only if I’m in the mood for it.” She glances at the TV. “Leo said you’re in college?”

“Yeah. A freshman.” I keep looking at the game, hoping she’ll get the hint that I’m not interested in dating her.

“Jake,” Sean says. “Go get us some tacos from that place down the street.”

“Why? You said you had lasagna.”

“I don’t feel like having lasagna.” He looks at Liz. “You want tacos?”

“Yeah,” she says, taking some money from her pocket. “I’ll take two and a bag of chips.”

She hands me the money, then everyone else does as they give me their order. How did I get stuck having to get food? At least it’ll get me away from April, who keeps smiling at me like she wants me to ask her out.

“I’ll be back in a few minutes,” I say.

“I’ll go too,” April says. “In case you need help carrying everything.”

“Good idea,” Sean says, grinning at me. “You two have fun.”

He set this up. He suggested I go get tacos, knowing April would invite herself to go along.

“So how do you like college?” April asks as we’re driving to the taco place.

“It’s good.” I glance at her. “Hey, I don’t know what Leo told you, but I’m not looking for a girlfriend right now.”

“Who said I had to be your girlfriend?” she says in a flirty tone.

“What I mean is, I’m not looking to get involved with anyone right now, even just casually. I just broke up with my girlfriend and I’m not looking to start something new with someone else.”

“Oh. Okay.” She looks out the side window. “Now I feel stupid for coming here. Leo made it sound like you wanted to meet me, but I guess he was just saying that.”

“Sorry. He shouldn’t have told you that. But hey, we can still watch the game.”

“Yeah, I guess.”

She’s quiet the rest of the ride to the restaurant and doesn’t say anything on the way back to Sean’s place either. She almost seems mad at me, but I’m not going to pretend I want to date her when I don’t.

“Back already?” Sean says as I bring the food sacks to the kitchen.

“It’s just down the street. It doesn’t take that long to get there.”

Sean watches April sit down in the chair, crossing her arms over her chest as she stares at the TV.

He gets up and comes over to me in the kitchen. “Can I talk to you?”

“Go ahead.”
