I go backto my room, slamming the door behind me.

“What the hell, man?” Rob sits up in bed, rubbing his eyes. “Could you be any louder?”

“Sorry, I wasn’t thinking.” I sit down on my bed, then get up and pace the room. I feel jittery, like I’ve had too much caffeine. Most people feel tired after a breakup, like all they want to do is sleep, but I’m wired.

“What’s going on?” Rob asks, watching me pace the floor.

“I’m feeling anxious. I can’t relax.”

“Something happen with your girlfriend? You talked to her, right?”

“Yeah,” I mutter, clenching my hands.

“So what happened?” Rob asks, his eyes following me as I go back and forth in the tiny room. “Is she pregnant? Is that why you’re acting this way?”

“She’s not pregnant. She dumped me.”

“Oh,” Rob says, like it’s no big deal. He adjusts his pillow and lies down.

“That’s it?” I walk over to him. “That’s all you have to say?”

He sits up again, leaning against the wall. “I don’t know why you’re surprised by this. You really thought it’d last? You guys live in different states.”

“It doesn’t matter. We dated for almost three years. We were talking about getting married.”

“Are you serious? You’re only 18.”

“We weren’t getting married right now. We were going to do it later, like after we graduate.”

“That’s still too damn young.”

“My brother’s getting married after he graduates.”

“It’s not going to last. People who get married that young almost always get divorced.”

“That won’t happen with Dean and Brook. And I know Haley and I could’ve made it work if she hadn’t given up on us.”

“Does she have someone else?”

“No,” I say, but now that he said that, I’m wondering if she does. “Fuck.” I shove his shoulder. “Why’d you have to say that? Now I’ll be thinking about her with some other guy.”

He shrugs. “Hey, you gotta at least consider that might be the reason she ended it.”

I start pacing again. “Haley wouldn’t cheat on me. She loves me.”

“And yet she dumped you.”

I look back at him. “You suck at making people feel better.”

“Just find someone else. You’ll feel better when you’re with another girl.”

“I don’t want another girl. I want Haley.”

“Forget about her. You know how many girls go to school here? I don’t know the exact number, but I do know they outnumber the guys. It’s one of the few things I remember about the campus tour. It’s like sixty percent girls to forty percent guys.” He smiles. “The odds are in our favor, my friend. You just need to get out there and pick someone.”

“I can’t stay here,” I say, going to get my keys. “I’m gonna take a walk.”

“I’m going back to sleep.” Rob turns on his side and yanks the blanket over him.
