“Outside.” He nods toward the door.

I sigh and reluctantly follow him out to the driveway.

“What happened?” he says. “You two get in a fight?”

“No, I just told her I’m not interested.”

“Why? What’s wrong with her?”

“Nothing. I just don’t want to go out with her. Or anyone. I’m good being single for now.”

“She isn’t looking for anything serious. Just go out with her and have a good time.”

“That’s not what I want.”

“Why?” He eyes me with suspicion. “Is there someone else?”

“No. I just need to be focused on school right now, not girls. College is a lot harder than I thought it’d be.”

It’s really not. I’ve adjusted to the workload, and with Tara making me study, I’m not behind in any of my classes.

“You can’t make time to go out with a girl?” Sean folds his arms over his chest. “I don’t believe you.”

“Then don’t. I don’t care.” I glance at the house. “We’re missing the game. We should get back in there.”

“I think you already have someone,” Sean says. “I think that’s why you won’t go out with April.”

“Think whatever you want, but it’s not true.”

“Then why do you keep blowing me off? Every time I ask you to come over, you say you can’t.”

“Because I have to do stuff for school.”

“You can’t take a couple hours to watch a game with us?”

“You mean like I’m doing right now?”

“Yeah, fine. You showed up today, but you haven’t been over here in weeks. I think it’s because you’re seeing some girl.”

“I’m not arguing about this. Let’s just go back inside.” I head to the door.

“Is it Tara?”

I turn back. “Tara who?”

He rolls his eyes. “You know who I’m talking about.”

“I told you I’m not seeing anyone.”

He walks up to me. “I think you’re lying. I think you don’t want me knowing who it is, which makes me think it’s Tara.”

“This is stupid. I’m not talking about this.” I turn to go inside, but he grabs my arm, stopping me.

“Do you really want to mess around with Troy’s girl? Because I can tell you right now, it’s not going to end well.”

“I’m not dating Tara.” I yank my arm back. “Stop making shit up and mind your own business.”

I’d like to tell Sean the truth, but I can’t. I told Tara I wouldn’t. Plus, I’m not sure Sean would keep quiet if he knew about Tara and me. I don’t think he’d tell on me to Troy, but it’s possible he would so I’m not going to risk it.
