I look over and see Sean standing there, a big grin on his face. “Surprise!”

“What the hell?” I walk up to him, smiling. “What are you doing here?”

“We came to cheer you up.” Sean turns back to the hall. “Leo!”

“Yeah, I’m coming.” He appears behind Sean. “Hey, Jake. You got some really hot girls around here.” He nudges Sean. “Maybe college isn’t so bad.”

“I can’t believe you guys are here,” I say. “How’d you know where to find me?”

“They didn’t,” Rob says. “They were walking around campus, asking people if they knew you. I heard your name and went over to them. I told them you’re my roommate and had them follow me back here.”

“It’s not bad,” Sean says, looking around the room. “This is the first time I’ve been in a dorm.”

“Really?” Rob says, sounding surprised.

“Most people we know don’t go to college,” Leo says. He comes over to me, putting his arm around my shoulder. “But Jake, here, has always been smart so we figured he’d end up at college.”

He thinks I’m smart? He’s never told me that, and I had no idea my friends thought I’d go to college someday.Ididn’t think I would. I’m good at coding, but I didn’t think that meant I was smart.

“Someday he’ll be a millionaire software guy,” Sean says, smiling at me. “But he better not forget his friends. I want a hot tub when you get rich.”

“Yeah, okay,” I say with a laugh. “What do you want, Leo?”

He rubs his chin as he thinks. “A truck. A new one. Black. With an extended cab.” He grins. “So I got room for the ladies.”

“Ladies, plural?” I say.

He shrugs. “With a truck that nice, I’ll get a lot of girls.”

“I like the truck idea,” Rob says to Leo. “Jake, get me one too.”

“Seriously? This is getting expensive. How much money you think I’m gonna make?”

“A lot.” Sean lays down on my bed. “This thing is small. How do you have girls on this without one of you falling off?”

My mind immediately goes to Tara. She was never in my bed, but if she had been, we would’ve made it work.

“Really, Sean?” Leo says. “We’re supposed to be cheering him up.”

“Yeah, I know. I knew as soon as I said it.” Sean gets up and comes over to me. “Sorry, Jake. I shouldn’t have brought it up.”

“Don’t worry about it. So what do you guys want to do?”

“You could show us around.” Sean smiles at Leo. “Introduce us to some girls.”

“You’re not going to date a girl that lives this far from your house,” I say.

“Yeah, you’re probably right,” Sean says. “I bet it took a couple gallons of gas just to get here.”

“You drove?”

“Yeah, Troy’s uncle fixed my car.” Sean smacks himself in the head. “Shit. I did it again.”

“Did what?”

“Fucked up. I wasn’t supposed to talk about Troy. Or Tara. We’re supposed to be cheering you up.”

“Why don’t you take them to the sports bar?” Rob says to me. “You can watch the game. Your friends could meet some girls.”
