I press my finger to her lips. “Just let me get this out, okay?” She nods, an amused grin spreading across her beautiful face. “If there’s anything I know, it’s that life could be over like that.” I snap my fingers, and her eyes go wide.

“Harley,” she tries again, but I shake my head, swallowing down the fear of what’s still to come tonight.

“I couldn’t live with myself if something happened to you. If shit goes down tonight, I need you to let Lachy get you out of here. If I tell you to run, I need you to go. Even if that means leaving me. I need you to get somewhere safe.”

She opens her mouth to protest, but I lean down and kiss her with everything I am. I devour her mouth, capturing her soft moans as I tangle my fingers in her hair, holding herclose. Lily’s hands rest on my chest, caught between us, and I know she can feel my heart racing for her.

“Harley,” she pants, finally pulling away. “There’s something I need to tell–”

“Well, isn’t this cosy?”

Lily tenses in my arms, and I frown at the unfamiliar voice behind me.

“Hello, darling. I’ve been looking for you.”

FORTY-THREE

LILY

“HELLO, DARLING. I’VE been looking for you.”

Harley moves to turn around, but I grasp his face in my hands, tears blurring my vision. “I’m so sorry,” I whisper.

“What–” Harley grunts as Declan’s hired muscle, Aiden, pistol whips him in the back of the head. His eyes roll back, and he slumps forward, but Aiden catches him before he hits the ground.

Taking advantage of Aiden having his hands full, I snatch Harley’s bag from the ground and try to make a run for it, but Declan grabs my wrist. Harley’s words echo in my head:If shit goes down tonight, I need you to let Lachy get you out of here. If I tell you to run, I need you to go. Even if that means leaving me. I need you to get somewhere safe.

Instead of freezing like I did when Declan attacked me before, this time I fight back. As he pulls me toward him, I bring my knee up, connecting hard with his groin. He groans, doubling over, and I wrench out of his grip.

I take my chance and run. If I can make it to the carpark and find Lachy and Tom, I can get help. The sound of Declan chuckling haunts me as I burst out of the warehouse door, leaving Harley behind with the man who almost ended my life.

I sprint through the carpark, weighed down by Harley’s training bag. My chest burns both from the adrenaline, but also at the fact I left Harley back there with those monsters. I know what they’re capable of. Especially after seeing Harley and I wrapped up in each other like that. Declan doesn’t play nice with people who touch his possessions. And that’s what I am to him–a possession.

Tears stream down my face as I spot Lachy pacing back and forth in front of Ronnie’s car. Tom is nowhere in sight. I don’t dare look behind me to see if I’m being followed. I can’t afford to slow down.

Lachy’s brows narrow, and he runs to meet me. “Where’s Harley? What happened?”

“My ex,” I wheeze, clutching at him and ignoring the way his eyes widen in surprise. “The Irish gangland leader from Sydney. He found me. He has Harley.”

He curses, running his hands through his hair, tugging on his curls.

“Where’s Tom?”

He shakes his head. “I have no idea. I couldn’t find him.”

“Wh-what are we going to do?”

“I don’t know.”

“We have to find them both.”

“I know, damn it!”

I flinch at his harsh words. My whole body is trembling, and I clutch Harley’s bag to me. “What about Zeke? Maybe he can help us?”

Lachy blows out a deep breath. “Maybe. If we can find him. Come on, let’s go.”

“Wait,” I say, holding up Harley’s bag. “The prize money is in here.”
