More bright lights, all aimed into my retinas until I could practically smell the smoke, and a doctor’s face peered down at me.

“Napoleon Lancaster. Full name, date of birth and who the president is please, son.”

I frowned, rattling off the figures and let him poke and prod me. “What happened?”

“You were hit in the back of the head by two hockey sticks. Be glad you were wearing a helmet and be glad they’re both shitshots. You didn’t have to worry about them winning, son, but that team harbors some serious hate for you.”

“Yeah, it’s going around.” I raised a hand to the back of my head and pressed my fingers into my skull, searching for tender spots.

“Sore?”

“Not like I expected after that speech. Headache, and those lights hurt like fuck, but I think you’re right about the helmet.”

“That’s good, then.” He patched me up with some meds and an ice pack, plus a list of instructions and symptoms to look out for. “Do you have to drive home?”

I shook my head experimentally and only winced a little. “No. I–someone will get me back to Rippton.”

The joys of an away game. Travel sucked and while we usually took the buses for a longer trip, we were both playing an away game while Blackstone’s stadium was renovated, placing us a whole lot closer to home. The doctor left me to myself in the temporary med bay, and I closed my eyes if only to get away from the damn light.

“Leon. Hey. Crush?” Wrenlee’s light touch on my arm gave voice to her hesitation, and I knew it wasn’t the first time she’d said it.

I found her hand with mine, curling my fingers tightly around hers. She sighed softly at my side, though she was still too far away. Her warmth emanated, sinking through my bone cold hand. I drew her in closer, until her body pressed to my side.

“That’s better,” I said with my eyes still closed.

“Is it?” Light fingers stroked through my hair in a soothing motion.

“Hell, yes. And honey? If you keep doing that, I’ll be snoring in seconds. Come back to my place. I need a shower, real food and then I’m going to crash, and I want you next to me. Please?”I cracked one eye open to find her peering at me with an expression that was half amusement and half concern.

“You want me to go back to your place after the game?” she asked in a soft voice almost as quiet as her touch.

I knew she was thinking about when I fucked her in my room earlier in the week, and my cock attempted a feeble salute at the thought.

“Girl, if you think I can be energetic after the beating I just took, you don’t know hockey.”

“I used to know basketball and after a win, everything turned to parties and alcohol.” She dropped her gaze.

“We won again.” I covered my shock, though I didn’t miss the hesitation in her words and wondered what sort of drugs the ex-boyfriend had been into. My blood boiled at the thought of anyone being out of control with her.

Wrenlee sat quietly, her cheek resting on my shoulder. “I want to make new memories.”

“We can do that.” I massaged her neck until she made the small sounds I knew I’d crave forever. Shit, this girlwasmy forever. Having her curled around me was like being beneath a damn good quilt. I stifled a yawn against the back of my hand.

We rested like that until Cooper trooped back into the med room, announcing himself with a loud whistle.

I winced as Wrenlee burrowed into my chest, hidden by her hair. “Fuck me, man. Timing?”

“Your boys are done. They won’t be playing for a while. And they might be missing some merch.” He tossed a bundle of slightly damp, padded cloth my way.

I straightened it out over Wrenlee’s head and let out a laugh. “You stole their captain’s jersey?” I blinked at the giant snarling bear emblazoned on the front, and the captain’s number six on the back. I tossed it on the floor. “Thanks, man. Will look good above my bed as a memoir.”

“That’s what we thought.” Cooper tilted his head, assessing the warm bundle of girl curled over my legs. “You two need a lift home?”

“No thanks,” Wrenlee’s voice came out slightly higher pitched.

I stared down at her suspiciously. “You coming back out?”

The head of hair trembled. “Uh uh.”
