"Keep your eyes where they should be."

My chest threatened to explode. Because no matter how much he tried to disguise it, my brother couldn't hide his identity from me. Not anymore.

I'd been wrong. Nash was the asshole I always expected him to be.

"I'll stay it once more, and then you're both dead. What do you want?" I counted in my head, knowing Reid, Cooper and Beau wouldn't be far behind me.

Aaron smiled, a horrible thing with at least one tooth missing. I didn't comment on that, watching his hands as hetoyed with the rope around Wrenlee’s neck. A small sound left her frame shaking.

Something cold and horrible settled low in my gut. My fingers twitched, and the gun pressed deeper into the back of my head.

"Don't move, “Nash warned me from behind. “I might miss and get her."

"Fucking asshole. We're not of the same DNA. You're not my fucking brother.”

"Like it matters," he said flatly.

“You always–”

"No. You were the one always wanting Dad's approval as a teenager, and now wanting you to go your own way and expecting a different outcome. Fucking idiot,” he muttered, the passion of the boy I thought I knew lacing his voice.

I shook my head. "You don't have to do this. Leave her out of it while we fight this out. No guns, just fists. Wring me out you have to but leave her alone."

"If you say so. "

"hey, are you fucking done?" Aaron screamed at us across the room.

The lack of control and situation was getting to him.

I kept that personal note aside, knowing I'd need it later.

“Fine. Why." I kept my voice low, flexing my fingers gently at my sides to encourage the circulation for when I needed them in the next moment.

“Because I’m Blackstone. Because it's been going on forever, this war between families. We cut the head off the snake, and we’ll replace it with the head of our own snake." Aaron grabbed the neck of his shirt and ripped down to show a black seal tattooed into his skin.

"Blackstone." I remembered the seal from the puck bunny Reid mentioned.

My mouth dried. "Let her go. It’s not about her at all.”

The desperation in my voice bled out, and I was no longer the controled person I needed to be. Not for her. The weight of the ring in my pocket sat heavily.

Aaron smiled. “Say bye." He grabbed Wrenlee’s rope and tugged her toward the window.

I launched backwards into Nash, intent on taking him out so I could make it to her, but a hand slammed to the side of my head, pushing me down and forward. Two shots rang out, and an inhuman scream ripped from my throat.

I rolled to the side, taking Nash with me, collecting the gun, and pressed it to his forehead. "You fucking little–"

"Crush."

Beau’s soft voice snapped me out of it. "Look."

I glanced up, blood draining from my face as I imagined the scene, Wrenlee’s body hanging from the rope dead before the damn thing snapped tight, breaking her neck.

Instead, I saw the rope dangling loose around her throat where she sat beside Aaron’s body. Two neat holes decorated his forehead.

I relaxed my grip on the gun. "What the fuck is this." I stared down at my brother.

He wiggled his fingers on the floor besides his head in a show of surrender.
