Page 40 of Crushing It

“Start talking,” I warned him, the only one he would get. “Because that wasn't fucking funny if you think this is another game. "

Nash shrugged. He pointed to me. “I owed you a show of power over a stranger.” He looked at Reid and Beau over my shoulder. “And you a show strength over an enemy. And I owed you a mindfuck over a friend.” He nodded and lay back, flicking his fingers behind his head. "They were gonna kill her anyway. This way I got to pick who lived and who died."

Beau let out a soft, "Fuck it." he tapped my shoulder. “He’s in.”

I glared at Nash. My fist clenched at my side, unused adrenaline ripping through me with the need to punched the absolute fuck out of something. I grabbed his throat and lifted him to his feet. "Don't think I don’t still fucking hate you. I'm not sure I believe you."

He thrust his phone at me. "Fine."

I watched the video three times, all ten seconds of it where Aaron proclaimed to a group of drunk Blackstone students bragging about taking me down on the side.

I threw it back to him.

A second later I was by Wrenlee’s side, tugging the bag off her head, and pressing my mouth to hers.

"I'm so sorry.”

"I ran from you.”

"I love you.”

Our words collided in a smash of emotion as I fumbled the bonds around her wrists. Beau knelt beside me and cut through the zip ties that dug into her skin. Blooded bracelets formed around each one and I kissed them as she shivered and shook.

"I can't do this. "

Beau held out a hand, and she looked at him, her blue eyes narrowing.

"You hold my hand while your boy does what he needs," he said in that same firm voice he used in the dungeon, and she responded to it. Her hands clamped on his, digging in.

I caught her mouth and kissed the absolute shit out of her until she responded, her tears coating our lips in salt and fear.

As I raised my head a roar filled her dorm room. "You're not going fucking anywhere."

I glanced over my shoulder. Reid blocked the door from Nash’s escape.

Beau glanced at me then at my brother. “Reid’s right. You scared the shit out of Crush’s girl. If you're in, then you also privy to our laws. You fuck with another man's girl, and he can take his pound of blood.”

"It's flesh," I muttered out of the corner of my mouth.

Beau shook his head. “I'm fucking changing it. I always hated that damn law."

I snorted, gathering Wrenlee in my arms. "I'm so sorry. Please, please let me make this up to you. "

She stared up at me, her eyes wide and frightened as she clung to my shirt. "I thought they were going to kill you. "

I nodded. "I thought that, too."

"And you were ready to die?"

I stared at her, not needing to answer. If she couldn't read that in my face, then we had no future. The thought crushed something inside of me, but I let that go for a second.

My head raised after a moment, and I focussed on Nash. "Beau’s right. Make an apology to her, and it better be a damn fucking good one.”

My arms wrapped around her as she clutched Beau’s hand as her literal lifeline.

Firm footsteps stopped beside me as Nash crouched between us. "I killed for you, and I'll protect you like you're my own family. Like I just did for him."

I blinked at the oath, chancing a quick sideways glance at Beau who nodded slowly.
